The Effective Use of the Resource
Often, mathematics is considered to be difficult and a heavy subject. According to Cook (2012), incorporating multimedia resources can effectively lighten and assist with teaching this subject. We believe that the use of technology and real-world examples can stimulate and engage student learning. For our topic, we rely on shopping brochures and PowerPoint media.
Consumer arithmetic is prevalent in everyday life in terms of how one manages money. And a relevant and practical aspect of this is learning to be a smart shopper. If we teach only the theories with little or no scaffolding, these students may struggle to grapple with the abstract, and miss out on the useful and practical applications. It may give birth to misconceptions, confusions, and inevitably, frustrations, which potentially can cause them to disengage and/or give up. Our approach is to mitigate such ordeal. By exposing them to a real-world context, we hope to bring them into a point of contact where they encounter less ambiguity, and hence, minimise the chance of misconceptions (Lalley & Miller, 2007).
The brochures act as a conduit to arouse the students’ curiosity in the topic. Teachers are recommended to use this along with the PowerPoint slides to continually engage them. New mathematical/consumer texts are introduced, incorporated and used within the practical context of the topic. Whilst the brochure opens up a line of discourse, it still hinges greatly on proper execution of the lesson by the teachers. They need to encourage and empower students to contribute to class discussions with products that they are familiar with and sharing their shopping acumen. Students can also encourage peer participation amongst themselves. Th...

...ssue. Some students may have fallen behind and may not cope or respond well with learning mathematics. The teacher must be able to identify them quickly, and differentiate their instructions and help them individually, or get them additional help. In the previous placement, the school has an after-school program that arranges a senior student (from year 11 or year 12) to tutor a year 10.
Future direction (Improvement of resource)
Changes to the resource should be made according to the students and their learning needs. What seem to work for one class, may not be as effective in another. Student feedback and assessment data should be used to gauge the effectiveness of the materials. The teacher should be open to scrutiny and suggestions from other teachers as well. This same material can potentially evolve into other forms, e.g. interactive iBook, and financial games.
