Television is a distraction for children and can hurt their cognitive abilities if they watch too much because it is non interactive. Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
Chad Johnson was an amazing football player and athlete who had a lot going for him. After highschool he stopped athletics and he used a lot more electronics than he used to. After awhile he developed health problems and he started to have a lot more academic issues and troubles. Many people wondered why he seemed to just fall off. Scientist and health groups have done many tests and observations on how too much screen time can affect your body and your health.Limiting screen time gives you more time to read and improve your reading skills and it keeps you from having multiple health issues.
On one hand, too much time can cause a few problems with the younger ones. It can promote obesity in kids, making them unhealthy and more likely to die younger. More time on the screen can also influence the kids, making them mimic what they see on TV, raising a more disrespectful generation.
I grew up with a lot of media devices around me so there was a lot of screen time for me and my siblings. I dont remember as far back as 2 years old but I've always rememberd being in front of a television screen or playing on a Leapfrog. That didn't stop anything though. My siblings and I still spent plenty of time enjoying the outdoors and doing other fun activities such as playing school when we were inside. Media devices didn't effect us in a negative way. So I feel that children should not be restricted from spending time in front of media screens. They shouldn't be because it reduces anger and fear, improves vocabulary in toddlers and older children, and it builds online relationships and offers chances for social and contact learning. Screen time has become an everyday part of life.
I feel that "Screen Time Limits Are Vital for Children" has many good points to why we parents should limit screen time. "Between 2011-2013, children ages 8 and under more than doubled their use of media devices with screens. The increase for children under age 2 was even higher". I believe some parents let their children have more screen time to keep them occupied while doing daily chores, dinner ect. I as an uncle do not let my nephew have screen time while visiting. I encourage him to do other activities. I feel like children need to learn how to have fun without a electronics. I agree with this outlook of screens, 7.5 hours of screen time per day is way to much for a child even an adult.
As he states, in the present age, kids are more willing to spend their time on electronics at home instead of going to a park or playground. In a article that I read by Kathryn Doyle it say that more than 90 percent of girls and 80 percent boys reported using a cell phone in the hour before bed, and laptops were almost as common. So this cause students to be tired in school, and makes it hard to concentrate during classes. But, this doesn’t only affect teens, it also affects younger children.
