“The foundation of all our confidence is found in the Blessed Virgin Mary. God has committed to her the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is His will: That we obtain everything through Mary.” Pope Pius IX (Source). In the traditions of the Catholic denomination Mary, the mother of God, has been immensely revered. She is the mother of Jesus and should be respected as such; however, there is belief this reverence of Mary has overstepped boundaries. The doctrine of Mary, Mariology, and the popular held beliefs of her have meshed up with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, Pneumatology, in experiencing the triune God (Greeley 350). The Catholic faith does have a sound doctrine of the Trinity, but there are dogmas about Mary which confound the role of the Spirit. As the early Church grew, many of the converts had to be reformed of their pagan views (Emergence 135). Unfortunately, these views permeated into the Church and influenced much of its views and beliefs; for this reason, the birth of Christ is celebrated in the month of December even when it is not accurate. Pagans used to celebrate the winter solstice, so the Church had to make its mark in it by making it into a celebration of Christ’s birth (Growth 165). The same logic can be applied to the over veneration of Mary. Many of the early converts used to do goddess worship to a similar entity and be a part of a matriarchal society. It would be hard to translate to a god who is always referred in a masculine way because of the patriarchal society of Israel. This could have led them to latch on to Mary, the mother of Jesus who is God; thus paving the way for beliefs about Mary to come up to deify her in a way similar to the gap left by not experiencing the Holy
