The Digital Divide
Abstract: This paper focuses on the “The Digital Divide” and its impact on society. It explains the different forces contributing to the gap such as social/economic status, gender and race. It also explains why and how these factors effect this social problem, and the possible solutions to closing the gap.
Everyday there are new advances in technology taking place. These advances have enabled teachers to improve their educating techniques in and out of the classroom.
Unfortunately these advances are not available in all the classrooms throughout the United States; there are certain people who are being left behind. The gap that these technologies have created is known as “The Digital Divide”. The beneficiaries of these advancements are overlooking the disadvantages these technologies have created for others. Although technology has certainly advanced our education it has created a divide between social classes, between genders, and between races. Hopefully as people become more aware of this growing gap there will be preventative measures taken in the future to create a solution to this problem.
Education is improving for those who are fortunate enough to have the most up to date technologies in schools. These technologies expand the boundaries of the classroom, and offer many opportunities to both teachers and students alike. New Internet programs allow for both face to face interaction and virtual interaction as well. Studies have shown that there has been increased performance on standardized tests. In his essay Mobile Phones, Digital Media and America’s Learning Divide, Professor S. Craig Watkins discusses the different ways that digital media affects the learning divide between middle and low-class students and also students of different races, ethnicities and cultures. Watkins’ purpose in writing this essay is to show how mobile phones are closing the learning divide as well as the digital divide. He uses facts and research that he has gathered as a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s research network on Connected Learning to back up his statements and improve his credibility as an author.
Where ever you live and whatever grade you teach, technology has made it into the lives of teachers and students. Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. As teachers, we need to embrace technology and try and stay ahead of our students if possible.
In Urs Gassers and Jon Palfreys, Born Digital, both authors take a sociological approach on analyzing and interpreting the new phenomenon known as the emergence of Digital Natives, or the part of society born after 1980. The main thesis for Born Digital that Urs Gassers and Jon Palfrey were trying to transcend, was how individuals who are Born Digital are transforming the world we live in. Digital Natives are transforming our world because of their interactions and intuit with technology and the web. Those born after 1980 have grown up in a networked world and are different, in sometimes enigmatic ways, from those born before them. In Palfrey and Gasser's view, the digital natives promise to make astonishing contributions to society, but also face daunting problems. It is the authors' view that as a society we must do all we can to enable the progress, of Digital Natives, while trying to create the organizations and values necessary to protect them from the threats that they face. In addition, self-perception of self is becoming slightly effected in either a positive or detrimental way, depending on the individual. These self-perception changes are in turn changing the way we react with society in the reality. These individuals known as digital native’s have a strong knowledge for technology and the working of the internet because they were born into it. We are now living in an era where people who grew up without technology are being forced to learn and adapt to a world where technology is becoming very prevalent in everyday life. After much thought and research, the digital divide is a massive issue not just in Detroit, but across the country and even the globe. It is a problem we may never overcome, but if we all come together and deal with this issue as one, we can see this divide shrink more and more in the future. Detroit is one of the biggest cities most affected by the digital divide. Education is important, so it would only make sense that technology would have a huge part in it. When children are born, they are placed into a world that is driven by technology. The Digital divide is a term for explaining the gap between demographics and regions that have access to the modern technology that give necessary and important information as well as communications technology, and those that don’t have access. Many people around the world do not have access to the internet neither global communication. North America is a huge continent made up of countries like the USA, Canada, Mexico and more. Approximately 579 million people live in north america, and the state california is located in the west coast of the USA. Since the USA is a rather developed country, a very high rate of the population has access to internet, specifically 98% of the entire country have access to internet but one in four does not
Digital media is one of the most rapidly expanding technologies of our age. When we as a society think of ‘technologies’, it’s usually synonymous to ‘improvement’. “[The] internet [has become] our medium of choice for storing, processing, and sharing information in all forums, including text” (Carr, The Shallows). While the internet does provide a plethora of information, it is only helpful to those who can fully access its potential. In the era of the computer, the digital divide in its simplest form is defined as gaps in rates of physical access to computer and internet technology.

With the widespread use of digital technology, the classroom teaching approaches and practices went through remarkable changes. When compared to the past ten years, today the classrooms look entirely different in terms of programs and technical tools used to enhance the learning skills of students.
This article discusses the use of the Internet in the classroom and how it can be used to personalize education. The effectiveness of the Internet in the classroom is evaluated at the Henry Hudson Regional School in Highlands, New Jersey. A faculty member at the school explains that the Internet was introduced to their classrooms to expand limited electives, advanced placement, and foreign language offerings. The use of the Internet allows small schools to provide an education that would not be economically possible without it.
Technology is Changing Education The best method for improving educational standards is to utilize every tool available, including state-of-the-art technology. Computers and the Internet have expanded the way in which education can be delivered to the students of today. Today's networking technologies provide a valuable opportunity to the practice of learning techniques. Educators are discovering that computers and multi-based educational tools are facilitating learning and enhancing social interaction. Computer based telecommunications can offer enormous instructional opportunities, but educators will need to adapt current lesson plan to incorporate this new medium into all the classrooms.
Imagine someone born in the early 1900’s entering a modern-day classroom. They would likely be confused as to what televisions, computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices are. It is also likely that they would be overwhelmed by the instant access to information that the internet provides. Digital media has become a large part of people’s everyday lives especially with the rise of digital media in classrooms. Digital media is growing so rapidly that people who are not adapting to this shift in culture are falling behind and becoming victims of the “digital divide”, this is leaving people misinformed. Internet access in schools has experienced an extreme increase within the last decade. By the fall of the year 2000, 98% of the public schools throughout the United States reported to be connected to the Internet (NCES, 2000). This is a reported 63% increase since the year 1994. Also in 2000, the ratio of computers to students was one to six, an increase from the 1994 ratio of one computer for every eleven students (Mendels, 1999). Aside from having Internet access in school libraries and computer labs, the abundance in individual classrooms has dramatically increased. This allows for Internet learning to be more readily available to students on a daily basis. Statistically over 70% of schools have this access in at least one of their classrooms (Mendels, 1999).
As time goes by, advances in technology will provide more and more avenues for learning by way of the computer. The Internet has opened the doors of the world and unleashed limitless possibilities in research and education. It may be only a matter of time when the classroom is brought online to all children and attending a school classroom outside the home is a thing of the past. Looking back over the last 20 years, I never would have imagined that computers would come this far and impact our lives so much. Just imagine where they will be 20 years from now.
