The world is changing at an extremely rapid pace, and technology is evolving constantly. Additionally, new technology is being invented every day, and people always chase after new technology, which costs a considerable amount of money. However, there are some people who all they think about is how to provide enough food for their families. This shows that there are two groups of people in society: the rich and the poor. Even though there is a separation in society, these two groups of people have one major thing in common, which is they both need money in order to get what they want. With this being said, they also must work in order to get money. Working to get money is one of the main reasons why jobs are so important in society; moreover, people also want to challenge and satisfy themselves as well as to have control over their lives.
When people are asked why they want a job, most of them will answer they want money. The reasons they want money are varied and depend on the individual. However, these reasons can be boiled down to one simple reason, which is people need money in order to buy what they desire. An example can be seen through the lives of many college students; they struggle to find jobs in order to pay the rising college tuition cost while studying at the same time. Another example is my parents, and they work hard everyday to support the family. They must have money in order to pay for food, clothing, and other kinds of bills. Moreover, in the essay “The Importance of Work,” Gloria Steinem asserts that “economic need is the most consistent work motive” (18). The reasons that jobs are so important in society nowadays are because people want money in order to attain their desires, challenge and satisfy themselves as well as to have more control over their lives. People need jobs in order to support their families, pay their bills as well as to buy new things that they want. However, there is another reason why people want to get a job, which is they want to do things that are challenging. By challenging themselves, people will also feel satisfied and gratified with their lives. In addition, they also want to be productive to prevent boredom from an aimless lifestyle. Beside that, people also want to show that they are capable of being independent. These are the reasons why jobs are important in this ever-changing society.
People will argue that having a low-paying job and freedom is better than a high-paying job and a 60-hour workweek. However many including myself, don’t share the views of Hal Niedzviecki’s essay’s “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With”. Having a higher paying and longer hours provides much more income and allows for a lot more financial freedom. This freedom can help bring much more happiness into your life compared to the lower paying workweek. Hal Niedzviecki mentions many benefits to the easy jobs with low-paying workweeks in the following statement
Living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, our culture has naturally valued prestige and luxuries. We admire fancy items and often judge other individuals by the clothes they wear, the car they drive, and the schools that they attend. The “American Dream” serves as a motivational factor for people; believing that hard work and dedication can bring “success” to ones’ life. Although this is partially true, it is difficult for individuals in the middle class and lower class.
There are a lot of reasons motivating people to work, such as their happiness, interests and self-esteem. However, it is important that jobs can influence people to keep their ambitions to achieve their goals, to satisfy their basic needs and to focus on one thing with their passion. Florence Nightingale gave up financial support from her family since she had an ambition to improve England’s medical and healthcare environment in the 19th century. And during my high school, “my job” offered me a suitable chance to reach my aim, too. In “Workers” by Richard Rodriguez, undocumented physical labor who comes from Mexico works in the U.S. to earn money for their basic needs. Furthermore, in Carl Rowan’s short story, “Unforgettable Miss Bessie,” Miss Bessie, a high school teacher with a plenty of knowledge, uses her passion to educate Africa American. According to these three people and me, jobs are so important for everyone because people need some ways to satisfy their ambitions, money for basic needs and passion on doing something.
The worker comes to believe that the maintenance of individual existence is thus the single and solitary goal of their life activity.” He believes that if a worker works only for the wage then he deprives himself of purpose in life. In turn, he implies that labor is the only way to affirm one’s purpose in life. Life is about the mindset each person carries. It is possible that one could work a job simply for the wage. Though money may not be the root of all evil, it certainly contributes to inequalities between those on opposite ends of the wealth distribution map. Upward mobility becomes difficult for those whose income does not match that of the wealthy because of the lack of opportunities provided to the people who are in the working class (Marx). Unfortunately, this repetitive cycle of wealth inequality draws parallels with the racial inequalities that are seen today. As the old saying goes, money is power. As the statistics show, some people have an insane amount of money, yet their fellow countrymen have close to nothing. In a struggling economy, unfair distribution of wealth can create real problems and unimaginable hardships for some people. For example, millions of people pay $2 for a bottle of designer water, while millions more live on less than $2 a day. If this is to one day change, wealthy people must adopt a much more magnanimous conviction towards their money.

To find employment, the quality of jobs we get generally goes up according to how much college education we have. There are employment opportunities for individuals with and without a degree. However, with a degree, it is possible to explore more options and create a better future. While there are employment opportunities for those who do not have a college degree, earning a degree it important because it opens the door to gainful employment, allows one to negotiate benefits, and helps one remain employed.
