The Crucible is written by Arthur Miller. The play is set during 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. During this time, the government was a theocracy, where the people were ruled by God through religious officials. The play begins with Reverend Samuel Parris’ daughter, Betty, where she lied unconscious in her bed upstairs. Betty was a victim of witchcraft, as long as his niece Abigail, and Tituba, his black slave from Barbados. They were caught dancing in the forest outside of Salem practicing witchcraft. Parris suspects that Abigail was lying about their activities in the forest. He also questioned Abigail why Elizabeth Proctor, the wife of John Proctor and a respected, lovely woman in Salem, dismissed her from working as their servant. Parris sent …show more content…

and Mrs. Putnam, members of one of the prominent families in Salem, enter the room declaring that Betty’s illness results from witchcraft. Mrs. Putnam is convinced that evil spirits are in Salem because her children have died under mysterious conditions. Parris refuses to mention witchcraft to the town until he gets Reverend Hale’s opinion. Betty wakes up screaming and crying for her dead mother. Abigail told Betty, Mercy, and Mary that she told Parris everything about their activities in the woods. Betty returned to her unmoving, unresponsive, unconscious …show more content…

Why is it such a big deal if they tell Parris about the charm of killing Elizabeth Proctor? I think that Abigail doesn’t like Elizabeth Proctor simply because she is married to John Proctor, whom Abigail is in love with. I think that the author’s intentions are to show that Abigail is the leader of the witchcraft related activities that were taken place in Salem. In Act 1, we haven’t met every character. We don’t know all the opinions of everyone yet. We know Abigail’s and Parris’, which are two of the most important ones. I think that John Proctor’s will be another important point of view.

The play, The Crucible, didn’t really relate to me. It did relate to the world. The girls practiced witchcraft, which was forbidden in that town. It was a sin to be a part of witches and witchcraft. Our world practices new things every day. Some of which are not legal or allowed. The town was close, almost all related or good friends. If it’s a small town, people will find out about almost everything that goes on. The girls are keeping it a secret right now, but as the play progresses, I think that the town will find out. People are always in search of help, just like Parris and Abigail
