In the passage from Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Crossing, there are several techniques that are used to convey the great impact on the main character. These techniques include the use of action words throughout the passage, the great amount of detail used in the writing, and the writer's use of past tense. All of these techniques worked very well together and makes the reader feel like they can actually feel and visualize the experiences that the main character is having.
McCarthy uses action words throughout the entire passage which helps the reader to visualize what the main character is doing. Words such as reached, reined, crouched, cut, drove, pulled, shiver-ing, fell asleep, woke, took off, looked, squatted, touched, and sat (McCarthy) all are helpful in thinking and believing the main character has really done the tasks being described. The use of detail added through descriptions. The use of detailed descriptions not only makes the passage more interesting to read but also conveys the impact on the main character to the readers through the use of imagers. In the passage, McCarthy uses imagery such as “stiff with blood”(McCarthy), “stiff and cold and her fur was bristly with the blood dried upon it”(McCarthy), “he got the fire going and lifted the wolf from the sheet and took the sheet to the creek and crouched in the dark and washed the blood out of it…” (McCarthy), and “he pulled the blanket about his shoulders and sat shiver-ing in the cold…” (McCarthy). All of these examples and mony more throughout the passage convey the impact of the experience on the main character buy making everything “come to life” and by helping the readers to imagine everything described like cold wolf fun that is stiff with blood (McCarthy).
