For starters, the Allies would have been obligated to completely invade Japan. Since the Japanese army would not surrender, there would be many casualties on both sides, and if civilians would not comply with the Allies’ will, the Allies would be forced to take drastic measures in order to completely quell Japanese imperialism, which might result in the complete annexation of Japan itself. Approximately 110,000 people were killed; most of them were innocent civilians who just happened to have lived in the wrong place at the wrong time.
