A religion is an organization of people who believe the same basic concepts about the world, and the universe as a whole. The purpose of religion is not only to lay out a set of beliefs for people but also to unify a group of people under an umbrella which creates a sense of community. Religion is very important to most people because it not only gives them a sense of their place in the universe, but it also binds them together with a group of people which is something humans generally desire. Religions form due to an innate need for humans to understand the universe, and religion is one way to do that. This could be anything from believing in a deity, or multiple deities, to the afterlife or even both. For example Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus all believe in gods, and an afterlife. While some religions do not believe in an afterlife, such as Roman-Paganism, all religions believe in the supernatural to some degree. Another common characteristic of religions is the belief that something is sacred. This could be a book, or text, an animal, a city, or anything really. For example Muslims believe that Mecca is a sacred city, and they also believe the Qu’ran to be sacred. Many other religions do this as well; Christians believe that the bible is sacred, and Hindus believe that cows are sacred. In the past Greco-Roman Pagans have considered statues sacred, as well as temples. A third thing that religions seem to have in common are rituals, or specific things believers must do. For instance many Christians believe that they must go to church every week, and pray everyday. Many Muslims pray towards Mecca everyday as part of their religious rituals. Many more of these examples can be seen in countless other religions. Overall religions although very different in many aspects actually have quite a few things in common.
