Not So Friendly Revenge
Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” unleashes the dark side of human beings and is seen through Montresor and his casualty, Fortunato. The story begins with Montresor and Fortunato whose futures are determined by one thing only, murder and revenge, which happens to also be the conflict of the story. Montresor acts friendly with Fortunato, but deep inside, he has feelings of hatred towards him. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” () This sentence in the story shows that revenge is in the mind of Montresor and it supports the theme of revenge that is going on throughout the story, but also shows that he has been insulted by his friend Fortunato which is unforgivable from his point of view. He told his friend Fortunato that has some wine and was not sure if it was amontillado which is a fine wine. Montresor wanted Fortunato to check out the wine to see if it really was amontillado and confirm its authenticity. Montresor also cornered Fortunato into trying the wine by saying he might be too busy and he might get Luchesi to taste it instead. Montresor says this to manipulate Fortunato because he knows that he will not let Luchesi take his spot to try this fine wine. And of course, Fortunato will not let that happen and insults Luchesi by saying he is unknowledgeable about wine and that he insists on following Montresor to the catacombs to accompanying him to test the
