The Art of Color The task of art today is to bring chaos into order. – Theodor Adorno The Boy Who Painted Christ Black is a short story written by John Henrik Clarke, based on a school for colored children in Muskogee County, Columbus, Georgia. This story was about a child, Aaron Crawford, who painted a picture of the religious figure, Jesus Christ, as a black man, for one of his teachers’ birthday. After their Commencement, the white supervisor of the Muskogee County School District saw the picture and rampaged about why such “sacrilegious nonsense” was displayed so prominently in the public eye. After the negro principal, George Du Vaul, defended his student and defended his additions to the curriculum, the supervisor fired the principal. The story concludes with the principal accepting a summer job as an art instructor in Southern Georgia, and Aaron Crawford going with the principal, to continue his studies as an art student. …show more content…

was born in Union Springs, Alabama on January 1st, 1915 and died in Manhattan, New York City, New York on July 16th, 1998. He was the founder and professor of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in the City University of New York City, as well as the African Heritage Studies Association. Dr. Clarke is also credited with assisting in the development of Cornell University’s Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University. Dr. Clarke was either an author, contributor, or editor in the process of creating 24 published books.
