Now with tanks and planes being lighter and more mobile militaries were able to mobilize vast amounts of soldiers to areas needed and provide them with constant air support. Also, radar made military leaders re-think the idea of a straight on attack. Instead of coming right at an opposing force leaders of militaries started to go around their targets and attempt to sneak attack them as Japan did at Pearl Harbor and Germany when it took over France. The development and advancement of technology over the generations has had a bizarre affect on not only our everyday lives, but more specifically on our militaries.
In WW1, the terrorist attack of a Serbian nationalist caused the ignition of flames that were set across Europe. The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary led to the July Crisis. A crisis in which, Austria sent an Ultimatum to Serbia, with requirement to be followed. Serbia accepted most but not all of Austria’s demands. Serbia’s decline of the Ultimatum led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on the Serbs.
This affected the war because lets say Germany attacks France, then Britain will say: “Hey wait a minute, this is my allie so you have to fight against me too.” Then Austria-Hungary comes and says: “Well Germany is my allie so you have to fight against me first.” Then Russia and Italy come along and say: “They are our allies so we will prot... ... middle of paper ... ...y encouraged media against Austria-Hungary. Also, Austria-Hungary had two demands for Serbia: 1. They wanted them to stop condemn this “dangerous propaganda” and 2. They wanted to send Austria-Hungary people to Serbia because they wanted power and to have control Serbia accepted but this was not enough for Austria-Hungary. Just after that, on the 26th of July, Russia promises help for Serbia and began to get ready for War.
This nationalist group targeted Ferdinand due to the feeling amongst Serbians that once appointed to the throne; Ferdinand would uphold the persecution of Serbs inhabiting the borders of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. Gavrilo Princip was one of eight members of the Black Hand chosen to execute Franz Ferdinand. Unloading two shots, Princip had assassinated both Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie. Seized by the police, he was beaten and put into prison, and there he died. The shots of this young man echoed all over the world to initiate the explosion of World War I.
Along with this death that impacted the beginning of World War I, there were many more reasons why World War I began. The alliance system which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy went to war with Great Britain, France, and Russia. Russia was tied to a previous treaty to defend Serbia against Austria-Hungary, so on July 30, 1914, Russia goes to war. Germany now entered the war to protect Austria-Hungary against the Russians who had already entered the war. On august 3,1914, German troops attack France, a Russian western ally, thus causing great Britain to enter the first world war the very next day by declaring war on Germany.
At this point the Austria Hungary Empire declared war on Serbia which was rejected by them, marking the breakout of war. All of the alliances marched out to defend their allied countries: Russia, Great Britain, and France were fighting against Germany, Austria Hungary Empire, Bulgaria, and Turkey (which were referred to as the Central Powers). Several issues arose up during the war between Great Britain and Germany as well as with the United States. England and America became enraged. As the war progressed several acts were enlisted to prevent rioting in the U.S. as well as to support troops in the war.
It was demanded that Serbia allow the assassins to be released to be punished adequately by Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary immediately sought an ally with Germany, assuming war would follow after their demands of Serbia. Austria-Hungary and Germany declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. The declarations of war were chain reactions in themselves. In defense because of war looking like a major possibility, Russia began militarizing.
Russia said they would defend Serbia which prompted Germany to order Russia not to help Serbia. Russia declined so Germany declared war on Russia and started to move its army towards France and Belgium. The French army was put on alert ready for a German invasion. France already disliked Germany and wanted revenge after, in 1871, France lost two of its regions (Alsace and Lorraine) to Germ... ... middle of paper ... ...wards or forwards until well into 1918 which caused even more casualties. During ww1, 20 million people had died.
Germany assured Austria full support, which resulted in an Austrian ultimatum that Serbia could not accept. Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia mobilized to defend Serbia, then Germany declared war on Russia. Germany also declared war on France. Germany wanted a quick defeat of France.
This made other European powers such as Britain, France and Russia threatened. Whilst all of this his made some tension, the tension built greatly when Germany made a triple alliance with Italy and Austria-Hungary in 1882. Germany did this because they felt threated by France, Russia and Britain who were surrounding Germany. They made the attack because Bosnia was recently annexed by Austria and Franz Ferdinand was next in line to the throne.
