The American auto industry has gone through a multitude of changes over the past one hundred years. Some of those changes are a result of new innovations while others were forced upon them by new government regulations due to safety or environmental concerns. Changes in consumer wants and needs have also played a crucial role in the design and manufacture of new vehicles.

One of the most notable names in automotive history is Henry Ford. Mr. Ford is credited with creating the assembly line. This innovation revolutionized the auto industry by significantly increasing production which quickly made the automobile more accessible to the average consumer by significantly lowering production costs. As a result, of this new development, many new automakers were spawned into existence. Today there are hundreds of auto companies around the world. Some of the most well-known American made auto companies in the U.S. include Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet. While many of those demands were due to safety and environmental concerns others are the result of a need for higher performance or for comfort. Muscle cars were the answer to the need for greater performance. There are many speculations as to the origins of the muscle car but one of the earliest muscle cars was the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. Oldsmobile built the Rocket 88 in response to public interest. The Rocket 88 was built with a high-compression overhead valve V8 engine and placed into a smaller, intermediate-sized vehicle. Other consumer inspired changes included a radio in the car. Today, those radios have flourished into stereo systems with full-size digital displays.
