Is the American Dream dead? Is the gap of inequality so large that we can’t return to a time where working hard was all you needed to become successful? Is reform possible so that this generation of Americans can obtain an education, a career, and an opportunity of income mobility out of a lower class? The three documentaries “Requiem for The American Dream” by Noam Chomsky, “Dream On” by John Fugelsang, and “Inequality for All” by Secretary Robert Reich all share their opinions on these questions and attempt to find out what can be done if the American Dream has really become a nightmare. It had the greatest effect on me because of how he weaved the tactics of big business and government to everyday life. It opened my eyes that the ten principles weren’t just happening in a board room in a skyscraper in some city far away, but instead it was happening on my TV, in my community, and potentially some of the people that I know. Marginalizing the population is something we’re seeing more now than ever, and it makes you think whether the groups are dividing each other, or the division is becoming so hardwired in our brains we have no choice to choose a side of unity. Redesigning the Economy with fewer regulations and a shift to financial institutions is seen every day, both in major events such as the Great Recession, and in the ever-fluctuating stock market which, though at an all time high, could collapse at any minute. Finally Engineering Elections was something we saw a massive amount of during the 2016 Presidential Election with Super PACs raising over 100 million dollars for Hillary Clinton and another 100 million for all Republican Candidates, not even mentioning the DNC and RNC.
