In Creating America, Joyce Moser and Ann Watters say, “Perhaps the closest we can come is to say that the American dream represents both what Americans believe themselves entitled to and what they believed themselves capable of. In other words, it is the promise inherited in the idea of America itself.” Here Moser and Watters say there is no clear definition of an “American Dream”, but their interpretation could be the closest there is to one. We feel ourselves entitled to things like life of prosperity. We also measure what we have with how much we are capable of achieving. Americans are continuously wanting equality of opportunity, and in reality we have come very far no less than 150 years ago both African Americans and women were not given the same opportunity as many white males. American are slowly allowing other individuals to participate in their customs, just like how in Moser and Watters text they mentioned, “We argue about who is entitled to it”. America in a way are extremely controlling especially on who can do what. Although America has come a long way many are not satisfied with the equality of opportunity that has been given to them. This was accomplished with the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution. Equality was finally met, not only in the basic everyone is treated the same and everyone has the same rights, but in the way where nobody is better looking than others and nobody is stronger, smarter, or more athletic than anyone else. The people of the United States had all become simple minded clones if you would. Those who were more intelligent, were prevented from using their intelligence, prevented from hold even the simplest thought. This story relates to Moser and Watter’s Creating America, by showing how the American dream of equality can shift and morph into something completely different over time.
