Have you ever caught yourself on your phone while driving? Around 1.6 million accidents are caused because of cell phone use behind the wheel. Society has become an age of technology, however it has become increasingly dangerous to be on the road with the increase of cell phone use while driving. Although using a cell phone at the same time while driving saves times, it distracts the driver and may cause accidents. Cell phones are very beneficial but when it comes to driving, it can cause harm or even take away someone’s life. Despite these consequences, many drivers still drive while on their phones. What drivers don’t realize is that the risk of getting into an accident is 23 times more likely if text messaging, 2.8 times if dialling, 1.3 times if talking or listening and 1.4 times when reaching for a device and 13% of all drivers between the age of 18 to 20 years get into an accident due to any of these reasons. Many researchers are even saying that drunk driving may be “safer” that using phone while driving. Statistics show that texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident than drunken driving and increases the risk of accident by 4 which is equivalent to 3 to 4 beers before the drive. It is astonishing to know how many people still drive while using their cell phones even after they know all the effects of it. Using mobile devices while driving can cause minor, serious, or fatal injuries. In addition, there are expensive repair costs to property damage to the vehicle, the health care cost, insurance administration, lost work time, and furthermore, accidents happening during rush hour can slow down traffic and emergency response time. Cell phone use behind the wheel is the number 1 driving distraction which also causes 330 000 injuries per year, 11 teen deaths every day and is 28% of all crashes. If drivers paid more attention to how much people died or got hurt just because of trying to use their phone while they were driving, less people would be using their mobile devices and would try to pay more attention on driving since driving itself, isn’t a very easy thing to
