In some way we all use technology; whether it be to share a picture, write a paper, or see a movie. To most, life would be boring and unbearable without technology. Why do we think this way, and what makes technology so important in our lives? Does it really make us less social, or help us to improve our education? The most common technology is the use of phones; both flip and smart. When phones were first invented in 1854 by Alexander Graham Bell, the main purpose was to communicate by talking over medium distances. An example of this would be from your house to your friend’s a few blocks away. In the United States one third of students K-12 have some type of school issued one to one device. (David Nagel) For students it can be a great way to gain insight on topics that may not be in a small school library or to share assignments from teacher to student. A study on University of California Irvine's iMedEd program utilized iPads in their program by giving every student an iPad with electronic textbooks, as well as podcasts of lectures and class management systems on the iPad's iTunes U software. Using these iPads it was found that they would score 23% better on exams with the iPad rather than without. (Jonah Cornstock) At Northdale Middle School in Coon Rapids, MN, iPads in the classroom have led to increased engagement among disabled students and have accelerated and improved their learning and comprehension. (Maria Baca) Although the devices are improving test scores, it does also open a window for students to become distracted from their learning. To prevent this, most K-12 schools use blocking programs to keep students from getting on social media and other distracting websites. Instead of going to a phone booth and having to call a friend, you can now text them with only the lift of a finger. It may help save a life when a few minutes is crucial. Helping our educational systems with higher test scores. Or even when we are feeling down and we need a little pick me up Netflix binging. Who is to say that technology is harming us. It may have negative effects when used too much, but doesn’t everything do the same? Drinking, exercising, eating, etc. all have bad effects when done too much; but in moderation it can be good for our health. In the stance of technology it has helped response times, education, mental health and much more. In moderation it is good just like everything
