The use of technology has become a way of life for Americans, and it is everywhere. Almost everyone has some form of it, whether it’s a microwave or a telephone. It is consuming the way we live our normal lives. Technology can be helpful and it has many benefits, but in the case of automated cars the negatives outweigh the positives.
It is no secret that computers are a helpful tool for the average human. Computers can give you answers in the snap of a finger and some are even located right at your fingertips in the form of a cellular smart phone. Although they give you the information at an increased rate they don’t always work. The system sometimes crashes or glitches leaving you without the information you need. Having this type of system operating a car is a recipe for disaster. The system could crash, leaving you without any means of braking let alone steering. This system could be very helpful and guide lost, tired, or drunk people to their destination. The down side is that if the people behind the wheel are any of those listed they will not be paying attention to the road. Even though the car is said to be able to operate without any help from humans, what would happen if an animal were to run into the middle of the road. Would the car be able to stop in time? Here in Minnesota deer are as common as dogs; you can see one anywhere and they don’t pay attention. If one was to run into the middle of the road and the car didn’t stop would the person behind the wheel be able to? If they were having breakfast because they forgot to eat, or maybe reading a book, would they notice in time to stop? Imagine having your life flash before your eyes while you were still wearing diapers. And imagine having a hot hunk of metal crash into you and shatter your sense of everything. When I was just three years old, I was the victim of a very scary car accident. While waiting to make a turn into my nursery school, my mom’s car was rear-ended by a car driving at 50 miles per hour. I remember how incredibly loud the collision was and even how the windows seemed to shiver in their rubber holders. Seeing my mom's head fly back and feeling the car swerve into the opposing traffic, I thought I was going to die. And why did this happen? Because the person driving behind us was texting on her phone and was not focused on the road. All of this, the emotional, physical, and financial damage, and the possibility of losing my mom's or my own life, could have been prevented if the car behind us was a driverless car. Briefly, a driverless car is capable of driving itself via an intricate system of cameras, sensors and computers. I propose that human drivers should be replaced with driverless cars because driverless cars are safer and more efficient.
While there have been surveys to understand how people feel about self-driving vehicles, they only surveyed a little over a thousand, which isn’t comparable to the millions of people who actually drive cars (Degroat). Many, more than 70 percent, do believe that autonomic vehicles will reduce accidents, the severity of the crash, and help the fuel economy, nearly as many are concerned about the way the car will perform under unusual or unexpected circumstances, as compared to the way a human could react and perform, along with if the vehicle would have any system malfunctions (Degroat). Driveless cars, are they the future or are they going to be an idea that never succeeds? It is something that everyone is wanting to know and see if it will actually work out. It's 2017 so what more can we ask for than cars that drive themselves? It is a great idea and if it actually works out as planned then it will definitely be one for the books. However, will the driverless cars turn out as plan or will it just be another failed idea and be pushed away to the side? With that, the inventors of the so-called driverless cars seem to be quite confident in there idea and what to prove that they can make it work and sometime in the near future have those cars on the road. They should not continue to replace bad driving habits that are abundant in our country. By allowing computer technology to provide an instant fix to human error, the error itself is never corrected. When involving something as deadly as vehicle accidents, fixing the error is just as, if not more, critical as providing a safety net.
