I liked that the article was on using graphing calculators in the classroom. I also liked that the article provided information on three specific teachers using graphing calculators. The study detailed what these teachers thought about technology as well as ways they used technology in their classrooms. I liked that I was given examples of real teachers using the graphing calculator in real classrooms. The article provided a refreshing view of technology, as it did not demand teachers use the graphing calculator every day in the classroom. However, the study showed it is best to use the graphing calculator only when it is beneficial to student learning. I would recommend this article to others. Many teachers have a negative connotation of calculators. However, this article helps demonstrate how calculators can be used for good in the classroom. The article demonstrates that, when used appropriately, the graphing calculators can aid student learning. The article discusses a study done in 2013. The study consisted of five different schools in Chile where teachers were using Khan Academy. Four of the five schools were chosen from a non-profit network of schools that provide education to students from low-income families. These families pay approximately $25 a month to send their children to this school. The fifth school was a public school in Chile. The researchers wanted to know how Khan Academy was blending with classroom practices of teachers. So, the researchers interviewed teachers on their use of Khan Academy and their reflections on the website. The study was based on a theory by Vygotsky who believed that tools play an important role in the process of learning and interacting with others. In the study, Khan Academy was the tool being integrated with the established classroom environment. Researchers interviewed eight mathematics teachers to see how they were integrating Khan Academy into the mathematics classroom. According to the teachers, they carefully thought about whether or not Khan Academy was appropriate to use in the classroom. The proposed solution to these problems is the inclusion of media from the website and smart-device application Khan Academy. To limit the overall possible negative impact on normal instruction, the proposed intervention will be limited to a single unit of instruction within the introductory Algebra course. The proposed intervention will simply be the addition of two factors. The first part of the intervention will be the in-class supplementation of daily teaching with the video lessons provided by Khan Academy. These lessons will not supplant normal teaching instruction, but will merely be an additional avenue of instruction. With the rapid growth of technology in America’s society today, the use of computers in school classrooms has increased tremendously—an action that certainly has become beneficial to students, educators, and parents. The use of computers has positively skyrocketed over the past ten years. Not only are computers utilized daily in large companies across the world, but the everyday use in classrooms has also become prevalent. It focused on using technology to enhance traditional teaching and to weave technology resources into the lessons. The article also has five technology tips on using technology in the classroom and teachers becoming comfortable and knowledgeable about use. The first tip was conducting mini lessons for quick training of new technology introduced to a classroom. The second tip was technology training should be school wide and every staff member should be knowledgeable about technology use. Third tip was to model it during any available opportunity so people are constantly learning how to use it.
Based on what I have read, technology effectiveness is a highly debated and argued topic among educators. There are many myths and misconceptions that even I myself have argued about technology use. For example, I always assumed that because I was a young, new teacher and used technology that most teachers who used technology were new and young like me. According to the article Research dispels common ed-tech myths, this idea is not the case. Veteran teachers are just as likely to use technology as new, young teachers (eSchool News Staff, 2010). A 2009 survey by Grundwald associates, found that as many as 34% of teachers were infrequent technology users compared to 22% who claimed that they used technology frequently, more than a third of their class time. This number is astounding to me. The research in this article seems to argue that even among those who do use technology in the classroom, many use it for tasks such as email, word processing, or games. Very few classrooms seem to be using the technology for actual learning and teaching.
However, technology should never substitute the fundamental learning in our educational systems. Specifically, in primary school, building a firm fundamental education is crucial. Seeing children still using fingers to do simple math in second grade is not a good sign of academic improvement. Though the students may easily figure out the answers by using a calculator, before letting the children get any closer to these technical gadgets, they have to first learn to figure out the answers themselves.... ... middle of paper ... ...

The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
Erin Millar wrote an article called The Pros and Cons of Digital Classrooms. In her article, she states the different opinions of many people on technology in the classroom. This article is shown in Opposing Viewpoints In Context. After evaluating this article, many opinions were made by credible people, but not enough facts were shown to support them. Also, Millar also demonstrated strong emotional appeal in her piece, and lack of definitions for the difficult words she chose to use. The impact from all of this information has resulted in many advantages and disadvantages in how children communicate in the classroom. This article concludes whether or not digital technology can be a beneficial use in school districts as shown by the sources the author used.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
After viewing the video by Wolfram (2010), I believe that as teachers we need to prepare more for using computers. Most of my students have a smartphone. And they use it for almost everything, including using the calculator. “Using new technologies involves time, effort, and a rethinking of instructional approaches.” (Sousa. 2015, p. 129). I learned math in a paper, and I love it, but I feel that today that is not enough for our students. Our students get bored about doing calculation the whole time on a piece of paper. Wolfram (2010) questioned, “Do we really believe that the math that most people are doing in school practically today is more than applying procedures to problems they don 't really understand, for reasons they don 't get?”
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.

Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
