Imagine yourself being twenty four years old… You’re fresh out of college, in a new setting, far away from home. You have a job lined up using your degree that starts in a couple months, but in the mean time, you need to make ends meet. On a free afternoon, you walk into a local restaurant, eagerly asking for an application. But, instantly upon arrival, the manager seems leary of you. He eyes your aura and refuses to ever look you in the eye for more than 3 seconds. You instantly get insecure. You spent well enough time this morning getting ready. Your hair looks nice, and you picked your best “job applying” outfit. What could be wrong? He simply tells you, “we have no opening spots at the moment.” He again, eyes you up and down and sighs

From a young age, we are told to express ourselves and be of our own individuality. It starts when we’re in daycare and we’re told that our drawing of zebras is beautiful, just because it’s different than the other kids’ lions. In middle school, we’re taught that “trying to find ourselves” is important and when we do, to never let that go. In high school, we’re taught to stay true to ourselves and never conform to society. Well, when we get into the real world, why do those same principles have to change? Piercings and tattoos aren’t something that people take lightly. Many things go into effect with each one. While some people are pierced from head to toe, others think that forcing a needle through your skin is absurd. While some people think that tattoos are meaningful and a work of art, others see them as a way to ruin one’s body. No matter what one person thinks of either work, each one is personal. It is one’s own choice, money, and time spent toward either. So, in reality, it isn’t anyone’s business but the one enduring the

While some take a quick pinch like one of the ear, others take a long time, using clamps and precise needles, such as one of getting a tongue pierced. Tattoos are the same way. Needles are dragged across the skin, imprinting ink into the pores. Both are painful, and require much carefulness and healing time. With both of these practices, one who has them exhibits great determination and stamina. Not just everybody can get their dimples pierced or a big tattoo across their back. By having these works of art, it shows that this individual is true to themselves and portrays their body how they’d like. Piercings and tattoos aren’t “of the norm,” and they aren’t widely accepted. So, for people to still get them done, shows great gratitude to oneself. With those characteristics, why do these individuals still get judged in the workplace?
