Survey and polls has been widely used in the U.S to understand public opinion on controversial matters. One of the issues that has become more prevalent over the years is environmental issues. Through recent global initiatives, many Americans have turned their attention towards the issue of climate change. Researchers have found a general concern among the population towards the effect of climate change. There is a popular belief that this problem is real, requiring combative actions, but many also deny its imminent consequences while supporting environmentally damaging activities such as fossil fuel. As argued by Zaller and Feldman, people have conflicting beliefs and respond based on which consideration is more salient during response time. Most Americans have come to agree human activities is causing an alarming shift in weather pattern. Even among both Republican and Democrats, there is a unanimous understanding of the validity of this problem. If most people perceived climate change as a significant threat, there should also be wide approval on initiatives to address this issue. However, various surveys have found a polarized support on policy targeting climate change. People seem less encouraging of policies that addresses this issue, but will decrease economic gain. There also many Republicans who believe in climate change and favor the coal industry. As mentioned by Zaller and Feldman, people have many conflicted views.
