The era of the Vietnam war was a very confusing time for the majority of the United States. Communism was rapidly spreading through developing countries around the world, and that created huge amounts of fear and tension for the US. Vietnam was one of those countries swinging toward adopting communist philosophies, and in fear of the domino effect the US military began a confusing involvement there for over a decade. As the war escalated many young citizens were drafted and forced to fight in Vietnam. Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried, was one of these young men. The man Tim killed is a symbol for the emotional baggage Tim is forced to carry through Vietnam and even back in the United States. In the chapter, “The Man I Killed,” O’Brien repeatedly reveals the scene. “He was a slim, dead, almost dainty young man of about twenty. He lay with one leg bent beneath him, his jaw in his throat, his face neither expressive nor inexpressive. One eye was shut. The other was a star-shaped hole” (pg. 93). He displays this exact scene three time in this chapter alone, and he references it several other times throughout the book. O’Brien uses repetition of this symbol to show that he will never emotionally come to peace with the things he did in Vietnam. The Things They Carried is written in a different style compared to most books. It is a composition of random chapters that are not in chronological order. While it can be sometimes confusing and difficult to read, Tim organizes his book this way to comply how the war was fought. Most times the army gained no ground and it was impossible to know if the US was winning or loosing. The soldiers didn’t know what they were really fighting for, and O’Brien captures this feeling though the subtle symbolism used in the organization of the book’s chapters. Overall, The Things They Carried was a very well written book. Tim O’Brien uses a plethora of literary devices to bring his experiences in the Vietnam war to life for his readers. He uses symbolism extremely well to inform the reader about the unspeakable truths of war. His use of symbolism also makes the reader feel like they were there fighting alongside Tim. In all, the book is an amazing first person look into the Vietnam
