Sylvester Graham’s Early years Sylvester Graham was born on July 5, 1794 in Connecticut, U.S. His parents were John Graham (1722-1796) and Ruth King Graham (1755-1834) along with ten biological older siblings and five-step siblings. Unfortunately when Graham was only a toddler, his father died on April 20 at the age of 74. When his father passed away, he did not leave a will for his family and so his property was divided equally to his second wife and his children. Ruth Graham became hysterical over the death of her husband which caused her to suffer from emotional and mental trauma. Graham had many devoted followers, who were known as “Grahamites” and religiously followed his principles like temperance, sexual restraint, taking baths, vegetarianism, they limited their diets, bathed more, and avoided spices and condiments. He was even described as the “prophet on bran bread” by the man Ralph Waldo Emerson which Graham took a liking to and referred to himself as this in his lectures and books. He was very popular during his time in the nineteenth-century He opposed the use of stimulants, denounced urban bakers who used ‘refined’ flour and whitened with ‘chemical agents’. He had a dislike of marketplace milk because the cows were fed on leftover swill. A quote from his book, Lectures in the Science of Human Life, “Bread should be baked in such a way that it will… require and secure a full exercise of the teeth in mastication.” (Graham, 237). He believes that man’s downfall is gluttony, that people over-indulgences in meat and starches hence why he helped found the American Vegetarian Society. “Eat your daily bread from fresh grains and drink pure water. Eat fresh, ripe fruits and vegetables, grains and seeds. Enjoy pure milk, fresh cheeses and eggs in moderation. Avoid fat, salt, sugar, meat, alcohol, tobacco and stimulants. Enjoy fresh air, frequent bathing and exercise. Get seven hours sleep. Keep a serene spirit.”
