Over 130 World Records were broke in less than one year around the time of the 2008 Olympics. Nearly all the record-braking swimmers were sporting newly designed high-technology swimsuits. Because of this, most FINA officials, along with a majority of the competitive swimming world, believe that long-length high-tech swimsuits give swimmers an unfair advantage. In 2010, FINA, The International Swimming Federation, banned all high-tech suits, but let the world records that the athletes wearing the swimsuits set stand. This rule will affect competitive swimmers of all ages. USA swimming follows the international governing body rules. The sport of swimming will not continue to progress if we do not allow swimsuit manufacturers to make advancements to their FastSkin swimsuits. A lot of suit manufacturers will downplay the effect of the banned suits. Some manufacturers are already claiming that their current suits outperform the previously used fabrics. Manufacturing of competitive swimsuits will continue to push the limits that FINA has provided (Brammer, Stager, Tanner 193). All swimsuit manufacturers were affected by the ban on high-tech suits. According to Dyer, there is a wide discussion involving whether or not the suit technology is unfair because of the high price or sponsorship restrictions (7). The sport of swimming will not keep progressing if manufacturers do not keep making faster suits. Improvements in performance tend to decrease each year (Brammer, Stager, Tanner 187). Swimsuit manufacturers will continue to push the limits of the rule to increase their own profits.
