Author, columnist, motivational speaker, television host, the personal finance guru of our time, Suze Orman worked her way from the bottom to the top with her financial knowledge to acquire her notable reputation today. “Orman started out as a financial adviser at Merrill Lynch, founding the successful Suze Orman Financial Group in 1987” (Orman 2014). Opening her own restaurant, Orman decided to invest her money with a broker at Merrill Lynch. Having zero knowledge about investing or any financial knowledge for that matter, she signed over her money to the broker which she trust that he would take the best route for her; Orman went broke within three months. “After losing all her money, Orman decided to become a broker and applied to the same Merrill Lynch office where she had lost her earlier investment” (Orman 2014). Trying to learn all she could, she eventually learned that her broker did not follow all the required policies; suing Merrill Lynch for inadequacy, Orman won the case. Ever since then she began studying and working hard for all her clients, doing all she could for them. Feeling that she could only reach out to so many people sitting in an office, Orman decided to start writing and publishing all her financial information and tips into books; such as The Courage to Be Rich, and The Laws of Money, The Lessons of Life. Once her books started flying off the shelves, Orman took her career a little further and became the host of her own television show, The Suze Orman Show. After receiving many awards and nominations, Orman still continues her weekly show to this day. After reading this article, it is apparent that Suze Orman can relate herself to any topic that she is presented with. She is also able to relate to whatever audience is sitting in front of her or reading her books or articles. Her increasing reputable reputation has earned her a spot at the top, “a two-time Emmy Award-winning television host, New York Times mega bestselling author, magazine and online columnist, writer/producer and one of the top motivational speakers in the world today, Orman is undeniably America's most recognized expert on personal finance” (CNBC). Considering all her awards and accomplishments it is no wonder that Suze Orman has earned her reputation of being a financial guru.
In conclusion, Jordon Belfort has had a major influence on today’s world. Belfort changed the way that people today see Wall Street and the world of stockbrokers. He lived at the top of the food chain but fell back to being “pond scum” (“The Wolf”). He even proved to all that a successful life isn't always the most perfect. Dennis Kozlowski was living his dream as a multimillionaire and if anyone got in the way of his dream to create his empire then they would be stepped on like a bug. This is what happened to Jeanne Terrile at Merrill Lynch. Terrile smelled something funny coming from Tyco and when she acknowledged that something was wrong, she was shut down quickly. Nobody knows for sure if Kozlowski paid off the CEO of Merrill Lynch, David Komansky, or not and nobody knows what they talked about. The fact is that Jeanne Terrile was replaced and the stock recommendation for Tyco soon changed after their talk. In Karen Hos’ Liquidated, she aims to study the relationships between corporate America and the worlds greatest financial center. . . Wall Street. She puts all her three years of research in her ethnography and thus the very first page of chapter one, we can already understand Hos’ determination to understand what Wall Street is all about. The first main theme explained is the relations in Wall Street that are based on a culture of domination of staff members, their irresponsibility dealing with corporate America, and constant changes that occur during this process. Another major theme we see in her ethnography is that Wall Street, first used for the communities wellbeing, is now profit oriented.
I chose to do my book review on Brad and Ted Klontz’s “Mind Over Money: Overcoming the Money Disorders That Threaten Our Financial Health” because I have observed, and participated in, bad financial decisions that have greatly impacted my family for decades. I’ve taken many personal steps to attempt to break the cycle of destruction that ended my parents’ marriage, and to raise my children in a debt free environment. Unfortunately, it has not been an easy task. I have read many financial self help books and attended seminars on the subject. This book caught my attention when it said that simply learning how to budget and pay off debt isn’t enough, that one has to first understand our psychological relationship to money, and then move beyond the financial constraints we put on upon ourselves. For years I had struggled with debt and money management. I had always assumed it was my lack of education that held me from moving forward. Reading this book has been a welcome eye-opener.

Through real life examples, these stories persuade us to walk the path of financial independence. American’s live lavishly and take vast amounts of debt; we have the illusion of these individuals possessing great wealth. The book says otherwise. The typical millionaire drives a used car, inexpensive items, and is frugal about saving. Throughout the book the main lessons were to be frugal, live well below you means, save violently, and to teach your kids how to be financially independent. If these principles are practiced in this book the possibility of someone becoming a millionaire is one step closer.
Throughout history, there have been many tales of hubris. The grand “hero” of the tale makes an executive decision, often against the counsel of those around him. This decision, of course, leads to some sort of life-altering consequence, which will forever affect the leader and perhaps even teach him a lesson about a poor attitude. Some of these tales are exaggerated fiction, which are created in order to teach readers a lesson about poor attitudes and what they can cause. Yet, from time to time, these tales of hubris are true, and the consequences are real. Such is the case with Royce Oatman. If Royce had been less hubris and more willing to listen to the advice of others, his family would have survived and eventually gone on to live happy and successful lives.
The book I chose to review for this course is titled, “The Millionaire Next Door”, by Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D., and William D. Danko, Ph.D. After learning that it was published in 1996, prior to the widespread availability of the internet, and subsequent ebusiness boom, I was slightly sceptical that the information held within might not be relevant for someone like myself trying to thrive in today’s chaotic economy. Fortunately, I was wrong. The Millionaire Next Door is full of concepts and principles that put into perspective how we view money and status in our society, and also debunks the myth that America’s wealthy are the ones doing most of the spending while living elaborate and carefree lives. There are several ‘takeaway’ principles that are presented to the reader. I will be focusing on the five concepts and ideas that impacted me the most.

Ultimately, this study shows that it is common for one person to rely on knowledge of another person’s financial aspect of life when determining whether or not to invest interest in them. Of course, there are other matters that could have altered these results such as if racial, cultural, age, or gender differences/expectations were considered. The matter of this study is prevalent in the field social psychology as well as everyday life.

Finance is a field that had always fascinated me right from my undergraduate college days. What make me interested in this particular field of study are the art of finance and the complexity of investment market which would allow me to employ my personal skills, such as analytical and communication skills, along with my personal characteristics such as dedication and compassion for what I do. As one of the most important sector in the world, I believe it would provide me with a broad range of career options.
The wealthy rule the world through manipulations. One way the wealthy manipulate society is through Wall Street, or the stock market. Brokers persuade clients to invest in stocks for prices that are way above their comfort zone. They then turn around and collect fees from those lofty sales. It is a deceitful game that only the fit and callous wins. This happens in “Broiler Room” when Seth cleans a doctor out of his life savings, and destroys his marriage by selling him a stock that didn’t exist. He continued to mislead his clients for his own greedy gain. We see in the movie “Boiler Room”, a mismanagement of fees and broker abuse that is parallel to our lives today (Younger, Todd, & Todd, 2001). A as matter of fact, according to John Bellamy’s article, a poll revealed that 71 percent of the public believes that limits should be imposed on the compensation of Wall Street executives (Foster & Holleman, 2010).
