Friendship doesn’t last long when people grow apart and have different interests. In Susie Kretschmer story’s “And Summer is Gone”, the friendship between Daivd, the speaker, and his childhood friend Amy starts to fade when their contrasting characters develop different interests, personalities and achievement as they grow up When school begins, both characters grow apart when Amy’s interest dramatically changes in order to fit into her social peer group. These changes cause her relationship with David to deteriorate as her interest shifts. Amy becomes less interested in “build [ing] little pyramids of clay” and prefers to “[go] to every part, every football game, every prestigious event at school”. She loses her interest in art and becomes more superficial and social. On the other hands, David prefers to “spend more time on my art, alone”. The shift in interest worsens their relationships while Amy follows in the footsteps of her friends to become popular, David stays in his artistic world. …show more content…

Although she had appeared confident and friendly when David first met her in elementary school and her adventurous attitude is appealing to David as a contrast to his introverted shyness. She becomes insecure as she goes to high school. She finds her extrovert personality seems to make comfort with her image change how she acts in front of David. She stops eating and complaining “ she was fat and affected to eat little”. The changes in personality affect the relationships since she is insecure about her appearance and what people will think of her. In contrast, David remains much the same; content matters more to him than appearance or social acceptance. He continues to live “ in worlds [he] drew”, while she defines her world
