Surrogacy has grown in popularity over the years. This is especially true in the United States. However, in Canada there continues to be a great issue regarding surrogates and the whole monetary process that has become associated with it. Due to the strict regulations in Canada, couples have often traveled to the United States in hopes of purchasing eggs for conception. Researches explain that couples have spent upwards of five thousand dollars USD. There continues to be a high debate on the morality of commercial sale of eggs (Baylis & Downie, 2014). Researches have discussed that due to the potential of issues akin to those that happen in the United States in the 1980’s with a surrogate mother, whom decided that she wanted to keep the child that was genetically related to her though she had an agreement with a family to give the child to. Situations like this is why there are states that have laws prohibiting surrogacy. There are state laws that state that the only way that a woman can choose to be a surrogate is if she is not compensated. These states have allowed for the use of surrogates under strict/restrictive conditions. When a situation arises and you have a family that is not able to conceive on their own, and they are told by their governing body that they are not able to pay for a surrogate that this in fact is considered an infraction and the couple may end up serving jail time and possible fines.
