Looking back there were not many options for a woman who wished to become pregnant. Those options fell to almost zero for those who couldn’t naturally conceive or where infertile. Now fast forward to today, where there are many options for those who cannot naturally conceive or are infertile. A few of the options that are available today is Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID), Gestational Surrogacy, Surrogate Embryo Transfer (SET) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). The first and foremost step to take would be to do your research and figure out just exactly what it is your going into. The next thing you need to do is talk with your doctor and see if you are physically able to handle the immense about of stress pregnancy causes to the body and your overall health. After you have the go ahead from your doctor and you are one hundred percent sure that you are going to go forth with the surrogacy, you must seek out parents in need. This can be done in many ways, but since the advancement of the internet, the way of searching and meeting potential parents has changed greatly (How to Become a Surrogate Mother). One of the main ways that the internet has helped a surrogate find potential parents is by using websites that are specifically set up for individuals who wish to become surrogates. The most common and often the safest way to become a surrogate is to go through a surrogacy agency. In a surrogacy agency, the agent helps you once you have found a couple that you wish to be a surrogate for. They will help you and the potential parents come up with a contract that states all the regulations that you must follow as well as the cost and how you will be paid (How to Become a Surrogate Mother). The laws and restriction vary from state to state. As stated in the article Enhancing Autonomy in Paid Surrogacy, the authors Damelio and Sorenson go on to say “There are six states that currently allow individuals and couples to enter into surrogacy contracts, and ten prohibit them in all or some instances. The other thirty-four states have mixed or unclear laws and case rulings on whether or not surrogacy contracts are allowed”. Having these mixed laws can make being a surrogate very difficult. The U.S. federal government does not have any regulations or laws against surrogacy, instead they allowed for each state legislature to administer their own laws regarding surrogacy, both traditional and gestational (Spar 84).
