The Peculiar Life of Madelyn Frey
Madelyn Frey was a peculiar girl with thick, tightly woven pigtails and alabaster skin, she was someone who you might mistake for a vampire. Madelyn was silent because she didn't trust anyone, she didn't trust herself, and she couldn't help but think people would just let her down. Those problems became issues, she tried therapy once, but it didn't help. No, her trust issues wouldn't go away and they usually resulted in more problems for Maddie, but she didn't care. Maddie sat at the back of the classroom and never said a word, not ever, and not to anyone. You may pass her off as 'shy' or 'a loner' but she was both and neither, in between if you must. He gets off the hospital bad and shuffles to the door, with one thing on his mind. Find Maddie. He opens the door greeted with the only thing he ever wanted to see.
"Maddie!" He yells flinging his arms around her.
"Ow, ow! Leg! Leg!" She yells he steps away and darts his gaze to the left.
"Sorry." He says, flustered. He looks at her to see she's in a hospital gown identical to the one he wore, he didn't stop to take notice that she was shorter until he saw her in a wheel chair.
"W-what happened to your legs?" Max asks worried.
"I'm immobile from the waist down," she says calmly, she sees him start to panic.
"But it's not permanent!" She adds quickly so he doesn't have a panic attack. "Do you know what happened?" Max asks her. "The nurse told me that the crowd pulled a bounce house below us, and it cushioned our fall, she says we're lucky to be alive." Maddie tells him, it all comes back to him, Maddie trusts Max.
"You trust me." Max says abruptly, Maddie smiles and nods.
"I do trust you, I did it max! I can trust someone!" She says her happiness almost bursting from the seams, Max grins, he saved her, he saved that peculiar girl named Madelyn Frey and he'd never lose her again.

Anne Lamott has an amazing ability to connect with the audience. With use of personal experience and scenarios to be able to connect with the reader using rhetorical techniques such as ethos and pathos. Although her use of vulgar terms may tend to turn off readers, giving her points less impact.

The main character throughout most of the book is “Verity”, or Julie. She is actually telling the story of Maddie, however, although her presence seems to still be main focus throughout the story. Halfway through the book, however, it switched to Maddie’s point of view, or “Kittyhawk”. With both of the girls, you can see the changes in them. They both develop greatly and you can see it through them by just looking at what they are afraid of. It mentions once in the story that Julie once said that she was afraid of growing old, and then she say’s later that she could eat her words: she is now afraid of never growing old. “But mainly so very, very stupid. I desperately want to grow old” (114). With Maddie, you can see her changing just by the way her want to live grows as she is trapped under cover for many months without being able to see home, her best friend, or even just simply someone that she is comfortable around.
Growing up, Charlie faced two difficult loses that changed his life by getting him admitted in the hospital. As a young boy, he lost his aunt in a car accident, and in middle school, he lost his best friend who shot himself. That Fall, Charlie walks through the doors his first day of highschool, and he sees how all the people he used to talk to and hang out with treat him like he’s not there. While in English class, Mr. Anderson, Charlie’s English teacher, notices that Charlie knew the correct answer, but he did not want to speak up and let his voice be heard. As his first day went on, Charlie met two people that would change named Sam and Patrick who took Charlie in and helped him find himself. When his friends were leaving for college, they took one last ride together in the tunnel and played their favorite song. The movie ends with Charlie reading aloud his final letter to his friend, “This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story, you are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder, when you were listening to that song” (Chbosky). The immense pressure caused by always trying to prove to the world that she was enough resulted in a lacking of social awareness and identity. Andrea doesn’t appear to know how to act herself when she is around matty for example the text says “She was always bringing up sex around Matty so she could demonstrate how cool she was with it.”( 2) It doesn’t appear that Andrea has had a lot of practice with boys because she's been so focused on school and being accepted in society; so that now she’s trying to catch up awkwardly trying to feel her way through. This also shows that now she’s also trying to juggle being accepted by her peers and the difficulty she’s having with both. Andrea constantly tries to conform to what she thinks her peers views are before she knows them. For example, when she sees Parker for the first time in college and attempts to make conversation by ridiculing students who played in the mud only to find out Parker thought it seemed fun; the narrator says “Feeling drab to her core, Andrea searched for something else to say, but came up with nothing”.(9) Andrea is overcompensating for what she lacks by trying to act like someone she isn’t, but who she thinks Parker is. Andrea’s views on how things are or ought to be is a constant recurring flaw that prevents her from making the relationships she wants so desperately to

First and foremost, the novel Hush by Jacqueline Woodson deals with a lot of issues, but if we really look closely at Toswiah/Evie’s internal journey we really understand that the book revolves around Evie/Toswiah and how she needs to about figure out who she is. Toswiah/Evie asks herself questions within the novel about her identity. So, if I were to judge: I believe the uprising theme of Hush is to never forget who you are. I say this because her character keeps reminiscing about how her life was in Denver how she had what she believes is “the perfect life” she had a roof over her head, food on the table, and a best friend who meant to world to her. She finds it increasingly difficult to speak to anyone at all. When trying to speak, “[her] throat is always sore... [Her] jaws are clenched… Every time [she] [tries] to talk to [her] parents or a teacher, [she] sputter[s] or freeze[s]” (Anderson 50-51). The beginning of the year is when Melinda finds it hardest to speak. She implies that every time she attempts to talk to anyone about anything, she freezes and can not seem to get the words out. Finally, Melinda builds up the courage to open up to her ex-best friend – Rachel. Melinda shows great character development by speaking to Rachel about the incident, as she is one of the most – if not the most – difficult person to tell. Although Melinda is nervous to tell Rachel, as she and Rachel converse, she writes a note explaining that “[she] didn’t call the cops to break up the party, [she] called – [she] put[s] the pencil down. [She] pick[s] it up again – them because some guy raped [her] under the trees. [She] didn’t know what to do…” (Anderson 183). Rachel asks “why [she didn’t] tell [her]”, and Melinda explains that “[she] could not tell anybody” (Anderson 183). Although Melinda was not ready to speak before, she is now ready to speak and that is what matters the most; she has grown significantly since the rape occurred.
