The main point of this presentation by William Julius Wilson was to make people realize that Americans tend to draw less attention to structural explanations for inequality and focus on cultural aspects. Wilson states that the general consensus is that “people are poor or on welfare because of their own personal shortcomings,” but this is not entirely the case. He talk about how race affects urban inequality as well as how racial stereotypes affect how others often negatively perceive minorities such as black men (who wear casual attire).
