Ten years after appearance of Geoffrey Wolff’s The Duke of Deception, Tobias Wolff published This Boy’s Life which was a memoir about his childhood living with his mother. To begin with, his mother (Rosemary) headed to Utah in order to make their fortune by mining Uranium. Once they arrived in Utah, Tobias decided to change his name to Jack, in honor of the famous author Jack London. In doing so, Jack removed himself from his father, who left him and his mother on their own shortly after he was born. Jack’s father during this time lived in Connecticut with brother, Geoffrey Wolff, who studied at Princeton. The story of “The ‘Boys’ in the Bunkhouse” is just one of the many stories about labor trafficking. In the book, Bad Boy, Walter Dean Myers talks about his family’s background. In the first chapter, Walter described his mother on page three, Walter talks about having no feelings for Florence Dean, and his mother died during childbirth. Roots, the title of chapter one helps us to understand Walter’s childhood. Even though Marry Dolly Green was Walter’s birth mother, he considered Florence Dean to be his real mom. Walter had several family members that lived in his house. His father was raising seven children. On page three, Walter talks about his sisters from another couple named Geraldine and Viola. His father also took care of Walter. His family also included a brother George.
The book Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life published in 2003, takes a close look into the lives of different families in the United States and how they are affected by race and social class and how their family lives differ. The Author, Annette Lareau, discusses how social class affects the parenting styles and how these parenting styles are affecting the children. A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal is a memoir about his time as a Jewish child in multiple ghettos and death camps in and around Germany during World War II. The author shares about his reunions with family and acquaintances from the war in the years between then and now. Buergenthal wished to share his Holocaust story for a number of reasons: to prevent himself from just being another number, to contribute to history, to show the power and necessity of forgiveness, the will to not give up, and to question how people change in war allowing them to do unspeakable things. The memoir is not a cry for private attention, but a call to break the cycle of hatred and violence to end mass crimes.
Adams Johnson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Orphan Master’s Son, amazingly depicts the disturbing lives of North Koreans and government horrors through its simplistic language with relatable characters. The Orphan Master’s Son takes place in North Korea and revolves around Jun Do, who is the son of an orphan master, but who receives the shame that Koreans place on orphans. Then he enters the military where he learns different fighting tactics and becomes a professional kidnapper for the North Koreans. For his reward, the government assigns Jun Do to a listening position on a fishing boat where he becomes a hero for fighting the Americans with a story that the fishing crew and he invented to keep from getting placed in a prison camp after to one of their crewmates defects. Jun Do then goes to Texas as a translator, where he learns about freedom and other cultures. When the mission fails the government sends him to a camp where Jun Do’s name and identity die.
In Richard Wright’s novel, Black Boy, Richard is struggling to survive in a racist environment in the South. In his youth, Richard is vaguely aware of the differences between blacks and whites. He scarcely notices if a person is black or white, and views all people equally. As Richard grows older, he becomes more and more aware of how whites treat blacks, the social differences between the races, and how he is expected to act when in the presence of white people. Richard, with a rebellious nature, finds that he is torn between his need to be treated respectfully, with dignity and as an individual with value and his need to conform to the white rules of society for survival and acceptance.
The novel begins with the author, Kurt Vonnegut, relating the story of how he and a friend returned to Dresden, the site of the most devastating firebombing in all of World War Two. This introduction, which is really the first chapter of the book, is written in first person as Vonnegut injects himself into a mostly fictional story. There are a few instances whereupon the author mentions himself being part of the action, but other than the first and last chapters, the book is mostly written in third person and tells the story of the fictional character, Billy.
The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this character in the memoir to show the readers the relationship between Jack and Dwight.
Whistling Boy by Frank Duveneck will go out on loan to San Francisco for an exhibition celebrating the 100 anniversary of the Panama-Pacific Expo. Susan Campbell Bartoletti’s historical drama story, “The Boy Who Dared,” takes place in Germany -- a time where Hitler started ruling. Helmuth Guddat Hübener, a young boy, desired to fight for the “fatherland.” He believed the Nazis were beings of good but later finds out that the government, including Hitler, were spewing lies and executing innocent bystanders. Germany is split between supporting Hitler openly, or secretly denying him, whilst Helmuth is stuck between duty to his country, or fighting for what is right. One lesson that the story suggests is that the lie is sometimes better than the truth, even if it is wrong.
...is also worth noticing that Black Boy is written in retrospective and thus offers the point of view of grown-up Richard Wright and reflects his thoughts on the events of his life twenty years after they actually took place.
The fictional life and death of a twelve year old little boy named Robert is vividly articulated in this moving tale by Thomas Wolfe. The reader learns of the boy’s life through four well developed points of view. The reader’s first glimpse into Robert’s character is expressed through a third person narrative. This section takes place on a particularly important afternoon in the boy’s life. The second and third views are memories of the child, through the eyes of his mother and sister. His mother paints the picture of an extraordinary child whom she loved dearly and his sister illustrates the love that the boy had for others. Finally, an account from the narrator is given in the ending. It is in the last section of this work that the narrator attempts to regain his own memories of his lost brother.
This Boy's Life is the autobiographical account of teenager. Toby and his mother's search for financial stability and a peaceful life. Toby’s family was split down the middle as a child, leaving his father and older brother on the East Coast and, for the most part, uninvolved in Toby’s life. The story begins when Toby and his mother, Rosemary, leave her abusive boyfriend in Florida to take their chances at becoming rich in the uranium mines in Utah. They are short on money, a theme that continually comes up throughout the book, but full of hope and love for each other. Unfortunately, as they arrive in Utah, they discover the uranium resources have already been bled dry and they must go to Salt Lake City where Rosemary manages to get a job as a secretary. Soon afterwards, the ex-boyfriend follows the pair to Salt Lake City and rejoins their life. His abusive behavior continues and Toby and Rosemary are forced to flee again. This time fate lands them on a bus headed for Seattle. Once in Washington, Rosemary finds a group of female friends who encourage her to start dating, eventually landing her with a relationship and later marriage with yet another abusive man, Dwight. The mother and son pair is in a constant fight for a better way to live in terms of security and stability, but their love and loyalty to each other is solid.
