The book that I read is Summer Of Fear, by Lois Duncan, the book was published in 1976. I liked the story of this book because it is interesting and a lot of mysteries happen to the main character. The author did a really good job of making the story exciting. I loved trying to figure out what was happening to Rachel and why these things were happening. Summer of Fear is about a fifteen year old girl named Rachel Bryant, who experiences some strange things during her summer holidays. Rachel is a brave girl, and has a lot of friends, but this summer holidays is the day where Rachel cannot forget. Luckily the old man knows everything she says, and the old man help her and tell her that her cousin is a witch. She try to tell all of it to her parents but no one believe her. I like how Rachel never give up about searching all this strange things and why only happen to her. So Rachel keeps searching for clues, the next night, she finds a letter on Julia's bed and she reads it. It says that she was invited to a party at her friend’s house, but she did not come. On early morning Rachel decide to ask her cousin Julia what this things happen to her since she came to her home. Julia did tell everything to Rachel, that her real name is Sarah and the real Julia is the one who died in a car accident. Sarah is a housekeeper. Sarah is none other than a young lady, who is into witchcraft, and Sarah caused everything that's gone wrong in the neighborhood. Sarah tells Rachel that she is in love in her father and she has a plan to kill Rachel’s mother on her way home to Santa Fe. Most readers should be able to relate to the characters in this book. The main character is a thirteen year old girl named Celeste Harris. She is an overweight junior higher who thinks nothing could be worse than popular mean Lively Carson stealing her best friend, Sandra. That was until her Aunt Doreen secretly enters Celeste into a pageant for plus-sized girls. Regardless, Aunt Doreen is a typical average aunt who is always in people’s business and has two daughters. While Kristen is the youngest and looks like a Barbie doll, Kathleen is the oldest who is getting married. Now, Sandra has been Celeste’s best friend since third-grade. That is until, Lively Carson, Celeste’s worst enemy who always makes fun of her, changes that. Finally, Violet Page is a famous large-sized model who is the host for the Miss Husky Peach pageant. She also is married to Theo Christmas who is Celeste celebrity crush ever since she saw him in concert.. Readers can learn a lesson from each one of these characters.
Sarah and her mother are sought out by the French Police after an order goes out to arrest all French Jews. When Sarah’s little brother starts to feel the pressures of social injustice, he turns to his sister for guidance. Michel did not want to go with the French Police, so he asks Sarah to help him hide in their secret cupboard. Sarah does this because she loves Michel and does not want him to be discriminated against. Sarah, her mother, and her father get arrested for being Jewish and are taken to a concentration camp just outside their hometown. Sarah thinks Michel, her beloved brother, will be safe. She says, “Yes, he’d be safe there. She was sure of it. The girl murmured his name and laid her palm flat on the wooden panel. I’ll come back for you later. I promise” (Rosnay 9). During this time of inequality, where the French were removing Sarah and her mother just because they were Jewish, Sarah’s brother asked her for help. Sarah promised her brother she would be back for him and helped him escape his impending arrest. Sarah’s brother believed her because he looks up to her and loves her. As the story continues, when Sarah falls ill and is in pain, she also turns to her father for comfort, “at one point she had been sick, bringing up bile, moaning in pain. She had felt her father’s hand upon her, comforting her” (Rosnay 55).
The only way to shut her up was to kill her, and that’s exactly what happened. The fluctuating personalities of the characters in this book is what really helps drive the story towards success. Skyler, the one who killed Manny and was a contributor to the death of Rachel starts off as an innocent pretty-boy. At the end of the story, he turns out to be a danger to himself and those around him. “‘You will never have to see him again.
After surviving this, and sexual abuse as a child, Rachel goes on to run away from home, and marries a caring black man from New York. Here she settles down, has a family, and raises twelve kids, while being constantly harassed because of her marriage, as well as her children, who are all of a different color than her. After eight children, her husband dies, and she remarries to a man of similar morals, race, and discipline. Throughout the novel the characters are put in these situations which force them to obtain information about the people they thought they knew. The center of finding out who everyone is was brought into play through the death of Marie. The story is told by David, only twelve years old, who sees his family an community in a different light for who they truly are under there cover. By doing his own little investigations, often times eavesdropping, David saw through the lies, secures and betrayals to find the truth.
All the novels that I have read in class this year have been absolutely fascinating and remarkable. Each one captivated me in an indescribable way. However, there is a particular novel that stood out to me. It is a novel that is highly enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone looking for a poetic and simple book to read. That novel is One Crazy Summer by the distinguished author of books for children and teens, Rita Williams-Garcia.
To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee is an excellent story that gives a profound meaning to many essences in life. The story showcases many cases of great qualities such as fear and courage. Also this book contains characters with impressive personalities, but in contrast there are many characters with poor qualities and personalities. Back in the 30s, when a negro faced a white man in a courtroom, the white man will win whether he is lying or not. This would give many negros tons of fear. In addition to this book, there is a lot of mystery within the story. For example, there is a very mysterious character in the story. In the form of courage, there are many situations where characters defy odds and take huge chances for little reward. There will be 3 subjects about qualities or feelings of fear and courage. They are about the Radley family, Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson.
In “Eleven”, written by Sandra Cisneros, Cisneros uses literary techniques such as diction and imagery to characterize Rachel’s character during her transition from age ten to age 11. These literary techniques help to describe how Rachel feels in certain situations while also explaining her qualities and traits. Through the use of these literary techniques Cisneros also collaborated on Rachel’s feelings when she was other ages and how she felt at that time during her life.
Marie had just traveled from her hometown of Ville Rose, where discarding your child made you wicked, to the city of Port-Au-Prince, where children are commonly left on the street. Marie finds a child that she thinks could not be more beautiful, “I thought she was a gift from Heaven when I saw her on the dusty curb, wrapped in a small pink blanket, a few inches away from a sewer as open as a hungry child’s yawn” (79). Marie has suffered many miscarriages, so she takes this child as if it were her own, “I swayed her in my arms like she was and had always been mine” (82). Marie’s hope for a child has paid off, or so it seems. Later, it is revealed that the child is, in fact, dead, and Marie fabricated a story to sanction her hopes and distract her from the harsh reality of her life, “I knew I had to act with her because she was attracting flies and I was keeping her spirit from moving on… She smelled so bad that I couldn’t even bring myself to kiss her without choking on my breath” (85). The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.

Sandra Cisneros writes a memoir through the eyes of an eleven year old. Turning eleven happens to be a tragic day for the main character, Rachel. Through various literary techniques such as hyperbole, simile, and syntax, Rachel is characterized. Rachel is a fresh turning eleven year old who finds herself in an awful situation on her birthday. Forced to wear a raggedy old sweater that doesn’t belong to her, she makes it defiantly clear her feelings towards the clothing item, and we see this through use of hyperboles. Rachel describes the sweater as ugly and too “stretched out like you could use it for a jump rope.” This extreme exaggeration demonstrates the fire within Rachel. She is a defiant and pouty little girl who out of stubbornness has to defy the sweater in her mind. “It’s maybe a thousand years old”, she says to herself in act to degrade the filthy red sweater even more.
