In Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, the author, Barbara Ehrenreich, takes on an experiment where she leaves her job as a highly acclaimed writer and decides to become part of the working class in order to better understand them and their continuous strains and worries. Throughout the novel, the author cleverly utilizes statistical data, her own personal experiences and the previously untold experiences of others to bring to light the harsh reality facing many Americans who, despite their daily hard work and effort, are shockingly close to poverty.

We were raised considering the jobs we could do in the future and the universities we may attend; we heard that hard work and dedication was the only essential to fly in this world. Everyone was aware of the standard of living that was expected and few hesitated to buy into the legendary dream. The American Dream itself is what we all grew up desiring. Suburban homes, multiple cars, hefty paychecks and fantasy vacations are its elements. The American Dream is exclusive and unsatisfying at its core.

In Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, McCourt illustrates with his words beatifically the horrific life of poverty. McCourt extraordinarily carves the story of his “impoverished childhood to his maturity at the age of nineteen” into the reader’s mind (Aubrey 1). In the beginning, Frank resided in Brooklyn, New York with his family until shortly after the traumatic death of his sister, Margaret. Lamentably, Margaret’s death was only the beginning of the unpleasant and awful life that Frank was bound to suffer. Nonetheless, McCourt’s real journey of hardship began as he set foot in hapless Ireland. From that moment on, his family was like anathema. As Frank withstood the pain of the loss of two brothers, he was replenished with two more. Growing up with temptations, poverty, and hunger, “Frankie [grew] intellectually, spiritually, and morally” (Aubrey 1). As his conditions worsened, Frank fervently held on to his grand dream of reaching America. Finally, Frank amounted all the money he needed to set sail to breathtaking America. Nevertheless, one of the most influential characters in Angela’s Ashes on Frank was his father Malachy Senior. After analyzing Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt Senior negatively impacted Frank through his alcoholism and positively through his dignity and politeness, as well as encouraging him to pursue education.
Our kids is a New York Times best selling novel by Robert D Putnam. It features in depth looks into the lives of Americans from varying social classes, and provides important data on the population of Americans and our disproportionate life opportunities. During his in debth looks into people’s lives, he shows us the way in which these broad social problems affect individual people, and really makes a moving argument that something is very wrong and something needs to be done about it. A couple of people that stood out to me were Lola and Lisa. Both girls are from very low income families residing in violent impoverished communities. These girls demonstrated how incredibly difficult it is to break out of poverty in our nation because of influences outside of their control. The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold? written by Brandon King discusses what the American Dream is, how it has evolved, and how to live it to the fullest. He writes that the American Dream in the past meant to live a wealthy, materialistic life, however the American Dream today is to live in stability. The American Dream also has the potential to be viewed from multiple perspectives as everyone is different and have their own opinion as to how live the American Dream. King also addresses that inequality is the main problem according to many; the government is only making the rich minority wealthier, ignoring funds for the lowers classes. The American Dream will never die as long as planning ahead and proposing policies to sustain economic growth are tirelessly acted upon.
At the beginning of the 1960s, many Americans were optimistic of the new decade. On January 20th, 1961, John F. Kennedy became president of the United States. John F. Kennedy had promised the New Frontier. It was a package of laws and reforms that sought to eliminate injustice and inequality in the United States. The New Frontier ran into problems right away because many of the Democratic Congress were southerners and did not support it. In 1964, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and he was replaced by President Lyndon B. Johnson. His idea of reform was to assist the poor. His proposals were Job Corps, Head Start, Medicare, and Medicaid. Job Corps that trained unskilled workers to be able to find jobs in the struggling economy. Head Start prepared young children for school. Medicare and Medicaid helped the elderly and low-income people pay for health care.
The United States developed the official poverty measures in 1960. It was developed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had declared a war on poverty during the Civil Rights era. The Census Bureau releases two reports every year that describe who is poor in the United States based on cash resources. There is also the supplemental poverty measure (SPM) which takes account for the cash resources and non cash benefits from government programs aimed at low income families. (www.Census.gov/People and household). In 2012 there were over 46.5 million people in poverty and of those numbers 10 million were African American according to the poverty reports. African Americans have been a major factor since slavery. Since the late 1660s there has been a race on poverty since the marches of the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King. One of the protests was the call to March on Washington in 1963. Dr. King stated that “on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity”. However, is this still true? Brandon King debates his interpretation of the American Dream in his published work, “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?” During his essay, the speaker highlights how important the American Dream is to the economy and providing a distance from inequality. The speaker emphasizes his belief that the American Dream is still alive within America and that people must work hard to achieve it. When discussing the American Dream, King will agree that the idea is alive and thriving in the minds of Americans; yet, I argue that the idea is on hold within American society due to lack of upward social independence and economic mobility.
In contrast, Elder envisioned monetary possessions to satisfy people’s desires, but after earning the yearned goal of money, people want to flaunt their new status and adjust their lifestyle. In “America and Americans” by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck describes the many paradoxes that are associated with that change of status. In the process of pretentiously displaying their wealth, people might donate their money to charity or squander their money through other practices, contrasting their initial motive to earn money. Money essentially becomes just another material possession and happiness is found through other actions. The American Dream is not only limited to the money and success, but the actions associated with attaining true happiness.

However, the author admitted that every culture has a different view in categorizing values and assumption.
In the book, Hillbilly Elegy, Vance overcomes the odds and proves statistics wrong. Statistics show that a child who live in poverty or in an unstable home are destined to stay in poverty. Vance was an exception. He was able to leave in the past, thanks to Mamaw, Papaw, Aunt Wee, and Lindsay; each of these people gave Vance the support he needed to overcome and leave poverty behind.
