1. The main ideas in John Miley’s “Ground Rules for Boomerang Kids” is that we can help at home adult children more by realistically preparing them for their future. His ideas are that coddling a child will not prepare them and will erode financial education and intelligence. Miley is a huge proponent for laying ground rules and limiting adult children in the home. He argues that the parent should not solely support the child without some form of payment and responsibility attached. The second article summarizes “the Accordion Family.” The main premise found in this article is more of acceptance. The author focuses more on accepting the idea of taking care of adult children and allowing them to stay home. The article states that the author Katharine Newman believes that high unemployment and short-term employment, staggered birth rates, longer life expectancies, and the high cost of living has changed societies views on multigenerational housing. The very definition of adulthood is changing causing a shift in acceptance. Newman is quoted as wanting the United States should look at Sweden and Denmark’s welfare systems.

The first article is that, an article. It is very direct and clear as to what John Miley is trying to say. He is writing to persuade us and to sell his ideas. I think his article would be directed to parents with adult children or parents that will someday have adult children. Which would explain the strength and conviction displayed in his article. The second article is a review of a book. I think the audience would be adult readers with an interest in the why’s of multigenerational housing. The purpose is clearly to give you an idea of what will be found in the book. I think both articles are writing very differently because they are meant for different audiences and serve different
