The root of the horror-stricken nation’s dilemma begins with the inability to be accepted in a victim’s own community. Seoul National Hospital’s director and former Korean Association for Suicide Prevention chairperson Ha Kyuseob says, “Effective communication is not yet prevalent in our society. So people sometimes end up with risking their lives, which is inappropriate. The social environment must change” (Park, Seungheon). Before suicide rates drop in South Korea, the people must develop a better, safer, and more comfortable social environment for all.
Among the world’s top ten countries with the most educated populations, South Korea is secured a spot annually. In 2013, South Korea was rated number six (Sauter). Korean students attend classes at eight in the morning. Upon their return to their homes at four in the afternoon, students eat lunch. From then on, they have the opportunity to return to school or private institutions known as ‘bagwons’ for second shift classes or extra classes. Most children do not leave school at all and stay at school to work on homework until eleven at night. South Korean seventeen-year-old student Young Hwan Kim says, “Korean education is like a jungle. There is a lot of competition, you eat and get eaten. I have no time to think about my future or my dreams” (Sistek). Each November, South Korean high school students take the national University test ‘Suneung.’ This test determines which university one is capable of being admitted into. According to Young Hwan Kim, the university you are admitted into “decides what you can do in life and who you can marry. It determines your future.” South Korea’s educational system has been praised continuously.
Until recently, however, voices are criticizing...

By any measure, The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong, known as Hanjungnok (Records written in silence), is a remarkable piece of Korean literature and an invaluable historical document, in which a Korean woman narrated an event that can be described as the ultimate male power rivalry surrounding a father-son conflict that culminates in her husband’s death. However, the Memoirs were much more than a political and historical murder mystery; writing this memoir was her way of seeking forgiveness. As Haboush pointed out in her informative Introduction, Lady Hyegyong experienced a conflict herself between the demands imposed by the roles that came with her marriage, each of which included both public and private aspects. We see that Lady Hyegyong justified her decision to live as choosing the most public of her duties, and she decided that for her and other members of her family must to be judged fairly, which required an accurate understanding of the her husband’s death. It was also important to understand that Lady Hyegyong had to endure the
Almost every day we hear about someone attempting or committing suicide. Whether it is on the internet, television, newspaper, or even by word, suicide is a harsh reality that is overlooked and undermined. According to one online article, “Teen Suicide Statistics,”
A mother finds her 17 year old teenage son hanging from the rafters of their basement. To hear of this occurrence is not rare in society today. Every 90 minutes a teenager in this country commits suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. The National suicide rate has increased 78% between 1952 and 1992. The rate for 15-19 year olds rose from two per 100,000 to 12.9, more than 600 percent. (Special report, Killing the Pain, Rae Coulli)
There are two main threads of suicide. The social or institutional suicide and individual or
Suicide is the eleventh most common cause of death in the United States. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person takes their own life once every fourteen minutes in the United States (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention [AFSP], 2011). Still, with suicide rates so high, suicide is a taboo topic in our society. Though suicide is intended to end one person’s pain, it causes an immeasurable amount of pain and suffering to loved ones close to the deceased.

In today’s society, there is a terrifying growing phenomenon happening amongst all ages, genders and races. Suicide has increased in the past averaging around 117 suicides a day in the United States alone. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the definition of suicide is ‘the act or an instance of taking one 's own life voluntarily and intentionally, especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.’ Suicide is an increasing tragedy and there are many ways that can prevent this horrifying action from happening to a close loved one, a classmate, or anyone.
“Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” (I-10). Ending a life is a big step in the wrong direction for most. Suicide is the killing of oneself. Suicide happens every day, and everyday a family’s life is changed. Something needs to be done to raise awareness of that startling fact. Suicide is a much bigger problem than society will admit; the causes, methods, and prevention need to be discussed more openly.
Suicide is a critical social problem in this day and age. According to Kutcher and Magdalena (2008), one of the top three causes of death among people from 15 to 34 years old is suicide. In America, suicide is the third killer to the high school youths between the age of 15 to 19 (Lieberman & Cowan, 2011). Suicide defined as a person who end the life in the way of purposely instantly, and deliriously which consider to be self-inflicted death (Comer, 2004). In general, there are six factors that cause teenagers involve in suicide that are depressed, family factor, a trend toward the youth, effect of parental suicide, bullying, and impulsive behavior (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

Suicide has become a critical, national problem and the extent of this is mind-boggling. Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among college students. According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
