Revenge’s Successful Implementation in Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo

In order to discuss the merit of a revenge, effective revenge must be defined. Fruitful vengeance must have completed objectives, acclimate to obstacles and challenges that occur, provide the avenger with closure, and the transgressor with understanding. The Count of Monte Cristo’s rebuttal is based on his precise design, has equal punishments for every party, ensures that everyone who wronged him comprehends his motivation, adapts to incidents, and gives the Count the opportunity justify his actions, making his revenge a successful one.

Unfortunately, Edouard met an unplanned demise, causing the Count to feel rather guilty. However, Edouard’s passing was simply a casualty of his mother’s obsessively overprotective tendencies. He probably would have met a similar end anyways, either through another of his mother’s selfish actions or perhaps through suicide when he discovered that his mother’s unhealthy fixation on him caused the death of the majority of his family. Not to mention that the Count’s solution to his guilt was the other major alteration to his plans. He left Danglars alive after revealing that his sudden poverty and imprisonment were both products of his betrayal years earlier. This diminishing of planned suffering did not derail the plot. Some argue that it shows a sudden humanization of Monte Cristo that waters down the revenge. This is simply not true. Danglars is forced to live with his ruined name, sudden poverty, and the knowledge that Edmond Dantes would always win. Some also debate that the fact that Monte Cristo himself didn’t die changes everything far too drastically to allow for realization of his goals. His plan for resolution was to die in proper fashion almost immediately after he achieved retribution. Haydee provided him with a more pleasant and romantic path. His letter to Maximillian and Valentine allowed him to vent about his actions and feelings. This enabled him to at least create an opportunity for someone directly involved with his actions to understand his incentive and for him to review everything he had done in such way that he was able to determine how just it was.
