Frankenstein begins in Russia which then Transitions to Geneva, Switzerland where Victor Frankenstein and his monster are recorded. Majority of this is set in Europe though because a lot of moving is done by the Monster from Geneva to the Alps to France, England, Scotland, and the university at Ingolstadt. The frozen waters of the artic is the most important setting though because being in ice sounds like hell, which is reminiscent of Victor and Walton trying to defy the secrets of nature and trying to go against and betray God himself. This story itself was written in Switzerland in 1816 and thus published two years later in 1818.

Victor’s life starts off in Geneva but leads to the university of Ingolstadt where he studies natural philosophy and chemistry. This leads to a knowledgeable Victor which fashions a creature out of old body parts. Finally he brought his creation to life but surprisingly it horrifies him. The creature then gets away as Victor falls ill to what he has done. When Victor prepares to return Geneva, he hears that his brother has been killed and when passing through the woods where his brother had been killed he sees the monster and concludes he was the one who killed his brother. Victor then takes a break by going into the mountains where surprisingly the Monster finds him and convinces Victor to create a mate for the Monster, which Victor agrees to do but, when creating the monster Victor realizes the consequences on creating this mate and destroys his new creation, which further angers the original Monster even more. Out of anger the Monster kills Victor’s friend Henry and more of Victor’s friends which lead Victor to focus his life on revenge upon the Monster. At first he is obsessed and ecstatic about his creation but then he soon learns it was a big mistake as he is scared of what he made. The huge monster is the antagonist of this story. He is fairly smart as he tries to learn human interactions and actually tries to fit in with real people. Robert Walton is actually writing the story through a series of letters of when he had met Victor Frankenstein. One of the last main characters is Victor’s father Alphonse who is very kind and understanding of the things Victor has done and continues to do. What moves this story is the revenge of both the Monster and of Victor to get what they both want, need, and crave. Without these motives, there would be no story as they would just mind their own
