For many years the moon has been a constant presence in the sky, it has orbited Earth for over four and half billion years. There has never been a time when people weren’t able to look up at the moon, as results it plays a role in historical culture. A number of cultures found their own ways of keeping track of the Moon and understanding how it works. Thousands of years ago, an ancient civilization, put together a massive mysteries stone monument. The purpose of this monument is unknown today but there is evidence that suggest it could have been used for observing the Moon and other theories that suggest other purposes. Today this monument is known as the Stonehenge. The Stonehenge is a massive prehistoric stone monument located in Amesbury, …show more content…

This technique would measure a lunar standstill, which is defined as, “The position of the Moon swings from one side of the Sun to the other” (Penprase p8). At the standstill, the Moon will be at its highest or lowest point on the celestial and when this occurs the Moon is at its extreme north or south positions. Other evidence that demonstrates that the Stonehenge is used for astronomical observatory would be the station stones rectangles show the orientation in reference to the movement of the moon and the sun. Fred Hoyle suggested that the 56 Aubrey Holes could be used to predict eclipses. Since Aubrey Holes are fixed reference points along a circle, which are used in astronomical calculations, he said he could track the directions of the moon and could calculate nodal points by moving the marker post around. In the work “Stonehenge Decoded” written by Gerard Hawkins, it explains how he analyzed the possible alignments between the major stones, he found that there were 12 solar alignments and 12 lunar alignments proving that the 56 Aubrey Holes calculate for counting years. This evidence stated above suggest the possibility that the Stonehenge was built for the purpose of an astronomical observatory but since there is no written records to confirm this there leaves other evidence to suggest other reasons for the Stonehenge’s existence (Penprase p
