Court documents show that the alleged killer at the center of Netflix’s Making a Murderer, Steven Avery, believed that his brothers or other family members possibly framed him for murder. Steven now claimed that it could have been one of his two brothers who killed Teresa Halbach.

Thus, indoctrinating individuals to believe that it is only through aggression that problems are resolved. Rather than being punished for acts of violence, those who commit such offenses are often praised for their “heroism”. In addition, the success of films like The Godfather, Gladiator, and Troy further aid in reinstating we live in a society that praises violence. Furthermore, this ideology allows for people to partake in violent acts with little or no backlash from ones community. However, when an person strays away from the “norm”, they are likely to then be viewed as a deviant. Such cases of rejection within a society, are often seen in the portrayal of serial killers. Although our society tends to condone violence when it is directed towards a specific individual(s), it does not allow the killing of innocent bystanders. Instead, crimes that are targeted against a number of people over a long period, entail the harshest forms punishments under the law. The primary thing that persuaded my current viewpoint on race relations was the George Zimmerman trial for the homicide of Trayvon Martin. This was a case that took place when I was relatively young, around the age of ten, so I feel that the event has shaped the way that I view racism today. Taking a closer look into Brendan Dasseys case can show several examples and evidence on how they were able to get inside his head and give a false confession to put him and Steven Avery in jail for life.
The justice system in America has a faint history of false confessions and forced confessions. In this case, they used a learning-disabled teen who had no initial idea to what was happening to him. In the initial scenes in episode four (21:05-22:30) shows how the detectives coerce Brendan Dassey which leads to a false confession. Fassender and Wiegert question Dassey (who by the way is without his lawyer) for 3 ½ hours. Fassender and Wiegert threaten Dassey with his mom even saying “You think your mom would be ok with that” referring to him as lying to him. They eventually throw out topics in which Dassey responds and gives them what they wanted to hear. The justice system is constantly uses this system of threatening which in return hurt the witness /alibi and the people around them. In Brenden Dassey’s situation, he admits to telling lies to because he didn’t know what was happening to him.
