The short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson portrays that women are looked down upon and considered a lower class. In this society women are traditionally stereotyped and illustrating women are less than men and should not have the right to choose their own fates. It is evident within the story women are mistreated and thought of at a different standard than man. Women are dismissed and not taken seriously in the short story showing the reader how women were thought of back in the 1940’s. The story portrays women as a traditional stereotype, looked down upon and weak.

The text shows how it was a woman who was chosen hto be stoned and it was Mrs. Hutchinson. Subsequently, when she was chosen it shows her as weak and brittle demonstrating to the reader that men are stronger, because when her husband was first chosen and had the black dotted paper he had told her to shut up; when she was only trying to help her family. When Mrs. Hutchinson was chosen for the lottery she kept on screaming, “It isn’t fair, it isn’t right,” (Jackson). Demonstrating to the reader she wasn’t suppose to be up there she even pleaded with the towns people saying: “Come on, come on, everyone” (Jackson). Depicting to the reader a weak woman in need of help.

In other words this short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson illustrates women as an unequal partner to men and they are overlooked throughout the story. This story helps us as the reader understand how women were treated back in 1948 and how women were perceived. Everyone who reads this story should be grateful to live in a society with feministic groups making sure we are equal unlike the women in this story who are dismissed and
