During the 1930s the Soviet Union went through several changes economically and socially. Some historians see what happened in the Soviet Union at this time as a Second Revolution; however, this is an understatement as the Soviet Union actually went through more than one revolution at this time. This period saw rapid political, social, industrial and agricultural change. These changes shaped the future of the Soviet Union and arguably the 20th century as a whole. All four of these changes worked in concert to form a rapid socio-economic revolution Moreover, a revolution from the government against its people made this socioeconomic revolution possible. Importantly the peasantry ceased to be the national social unit as urbanisation took its effect. Urbanisation occurred due to the use of collective farming in the agricultural sector and also, due to the rapid industrialisation of the cities. As the demand for workers increased many moved to the industrial heartland of the Soviet Union. Under Stalinism, both industrial and agricultural industries began to be looked upon as single social units. Consequently, the idea of the individual did not exist in the eyes in the regime. Ultimately, urbanisation was forced as people were coerced or had no choice but to move to the new cities in search of work. The revolutions the Soviet Union went through during the 1930s were violent. It was a very different form of violence to the October Revolution as this violence came from the regime against its people to force a social revolution through. By the start of World War II, the Soviet Union had become an industrial powerhouse. This revolution from above made terror like in France during the 1790s the order of the day. Terror was employed to make the people worship and conform to the ideals of the Stalinist regime. Without a doubt, this period of social change and revolution would not have happened so soon without this terror. Revolution from above made the social revolution possible. Therefore, it is simply insufficient to say that there was a second revolution. This is because there were several revolutions at the time that influenced each other to shape and change Soviet Society. These revolutions were industrial, socioeconomic and military.
