Stages of Prenatal Development
Before the baby is born, he/she must grow and be fully developed. During this time, all the vital organs will start to develop. There are three stages of pregnancy that are called trimesters. Every trimester lasts for three months. During this time, the baby will be receiving from the mother all the minerals and nutrients needed in order to survive and develop. During pregnancy, every woman might feel different, both physically and emotionally. Of course, during pregnancy, both the baby and the mother will undergo a process in which many health problems can occur if the mother does not take care of herself and her baby. It is crucial for both the mother and the baby have a good prenatal care to ensure both mother and baby are healthy.
The first prenatal stage is called the germinal stage. As a matter of fact, the germinal stage is the most critical to the baby’s development. The UCFS Medical Center states that most miscarriages and birth defects occur during this trimester. The first trimester will last from week 1 to week 12. This trimester is called the fetal stage. The third trimester is from week 29 to week 40. During this trimester, the baby’s skeletons are fully formed, but still soft and fragile. Throughout the fetal stage, babies will gain around one-half a pound a week. By the end of the third trimester, babies organs are ready to function on their own. Mothers on the other hand, endures many changes. First of all, she will have shortness of breath, swelling extremities, the breast will start to leak colostrum. Also, she will have sleeping problems.
