There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the Catholic Church in regards to priests and sexual abuse. The film “Spotlight”, directed by Tom McCarthy, tells the in depth story about the Boston Globe and their attempt to expose these acts of sexual assault. Michael Rezendes, a rookie reporter, is determined to release a news story making the whole country aware that in his own city, there were over 80 cases of sexual assault committed by priests of the Catholic Church. With the help of the Boston Globe reporters, a series of interviews and research were conducted and eventually a story was developed. While the story was eventually released, it can be argued that without the display of leadership by Rezendes, it never would have been completed. …show more content…

There are meetings among the news team at different points in the film. After a series of interviews and research is conducted, the team has another meeting between themselves. As we get a glimpse of each additional meeting, we see that Rezendes displays more and more interest in the case. Originally, a man came into the office and spoke about his experience. After this, he presented the team with the possibility of there being a lot more than thirteen assault cases. After this scene is presented, the Globe held a meeting and Rezendes was not convinced. As the film went on, it came to a point where Rezendes began speaking out against his superior to protect the case. Eventually, Rezendes proves to be the only reporter who believes there are possibly more than ninety cases. Lastly, Rezendes proves he is now involved in the case on a personal level towards the end of the film. When the case shows signs of completion and the last interviews are being conducted, silent night is played over different shots of the reports in distress. Eventually, we see Rezendes sitting in a church listening to a children’s choir as they sing. This proves that Rezendes has reached a point where he is doing all he can to help the victims in the film. His passion for the case displays
