Speech on Rubin Carter's Guilt or Innocence Good morning teachers and students today I will be presenting a speech which provides my opinion on whether I believe Rubin Carter was guilty of committing a crime for the triple murder on June 17, 1966 in the Lafayette Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. The information I have gathered to support my opinion are based on the movie “The Hurricane” starring Denzel Washington, and various websites such as Cal Deal’s, “The other side of the story”. After watching the film, I instantly believed that Rubin Carter was not guilty. However after researching Carter’s case through various websites, the proof is not absolute that Carter is innocent. According to the movie, he had an unfair trial due to racial issues, the juries consisted of all white people, the police involved in the investigation were corrupt since they suppressed information, the court worked against Carter assuming that he was already guilty before even presenting evidence, and Carter claims he passed a lie detector test. But not everything portrayed in the movie is 100% true; parts of it were deliberately fictionalized in order to make the film more entertaining and more convincing towards Carter’s innocence. For instance, Carter did not pass a lie detector test although he claimed he did. Apparently the authorities offered Carter, on the eve of the second trial, a chance to take a second test. They said if he passes it, they drop the charges and if he flunks it, they will agree not
