Rape is a taboo subject and is known across the globe as an unacceptable, yet why is so prevalent in India? As individuals we know that rape is a horrendous act that causes a lot of trauma for the victim. Rape in India is an example of a social system in which men feel that they need to be dominant, despite changes in society‘s attitudes towards women. Every 20 minutes a woman in India is raped (Feingold, pg.1). The high rates of rape to Indian women lead activist groups like Maitree to come in and fight for the government to take action on forced sexual assault. The government does not have adequate laws and system, the police men and politicians are corrupted and Indian men feel entitled to rape women, so it is left to the activist groups, to take a stance against rape.
As most individuals scrolled down their Facebook pages in the middle of December of 2012, they saw horrific pictures of a woman beaten and ganged raped in India. Jyoti Singh Pandey and her male friend left the movies after seeing The Life of Pi; she was ready to head home, …show more content…

The bus driver kept on driving around the bus and doing his job, which had the bus running for an extra 25 minutes after it was supposed to stop. The six men took turns raping and assaulting Jyoti in front of her friend, while the bus was running. Jyoti and her friend were almost beaten to death by these culprits while this was happening the bus driver did not step in and stop this situation from happening. They later were dumped off the bus naked, abused, and critically hurt. The victims were left on the ground for 15 minutes while onlookers observed the situation and did nothing. It took three individuals to get help for the young girl and her friend. She died 13 days later due to her injuries (Hindustantimes, pg.1).
