Sojourner Truth was an advocate for women’s rights. The essence of her speech at the “Woman’s Rights” convention showed the external thoughts of a woman, not just any woman but a former slave. Truth used, like all other inequalities around that time, religion as a base to fight for women’s right; as well as women’s children and their attitudes towards their mothers. She started off her speech with background information about herself. Truth wanted the audience of her speech to know why she had a right to be on that stage; why women deserved equal rights just as men. Truth had begun her speech as she told her audience what types of spirits they had. “I see that some of you have got the spirit of a goose, and some have got the spirit of a snake”. (Essay Reader p.39) She went on to say that she was a citizen of New York; she had been born a slave in New York, and stood before them a free black woman. “I feel at home here…I am a citizen of the State of New York; I was born in it, I was a slave in the State of New York; and now I am a Citizen of this State. According to Truth, Ester spoke out against her treatment as a woman, and had been granted half of the King’s kingdom.
