Response Paper Mills in his paper,explains sociology as how he sees it.His main point is that most of the problems faced by individuals in society have social roots and are shared by many others.Hence sociologist needs to demonstrate why these problems have sociological causes,enabling an individual to understand how his or her biography is linked to structure and history of society.This is what he calls social imagination. In India, If an engineer do not get job ,he may get depressed and consider it as personal downfall but when we see it through sociological persepective,we see that this is the case of most of the engineers in our country and thus its a public issue. Hence it cannot be resolved completely until and unless the issue is worked out. The main strength of his ideas is that application of these to daily life problems, which enables us to change personal situation and ultimately creating better society. However I think it is important that sociological imagination should not be used as an excuse to try harder to achieve success in life. Mills was heavily influenced by Marxist thought.He shared with Marxist sociology that society is divided between powerless and powerful.He shared the concept of alienation,effect of social structure on personality and manipulation by mass media.At the same time Mills denied economic power as main conflict in society.He was also against individualistic. This concept channels the Marxist idea that "any society does not consist of individuals but expresses the sum of relationships and conditions that the individual actor is forming”. Word count:499
