Society is constantly changing, and along with it our holidays end up changing. The holiday that society has the largest impact on is Christmas. Not only does society play an important role in changing Christmas, so does time. Society and time together, have the greatest influence on the changes we see in all the holidays. As time goes on, society changes depending on the morals and culture that the people partake in. In this course, we have discussed how Christmas was created as a religious holiday, but as time as went on, it has slowly morphed into a secular holiday. In the 1950s, the percentage of individuals who attended mass was about 80%. Now this percentage is down to 20-25%. In 50 years, the number of church goers drop more than half. Since they do not attend mass on a regular basis, it is safe to assume that they will not attend on Christmas. Although, there may be a handful that only go on holidays, the reality is that Christians are not invested in church anymore. If they cannot attend on an important religious holiday, it shows that they either are unaware of how important the religious themes are, or they simply just do not care. Since there was such a drastic decrease in the amount of church goers over the years, this is proof that this number will keep dropping. Sooner or later going to mass on Christmas will be a rare and uncommon activity to partake in. Communicating with loved ones is also changing vastly. Skype, and facetiming is allowing individual to connect with their families that they may not get a chance to visit during the holiday season. Emailing, has also helped change Christmas since e-cards are saving people money by sending their holiday cards online. In the future, I feel that technology will allow us to virtually connect with our loved ones. In the future scientists may create tools such as holograms that could possibly allow us to reach our loved ones with ease and actually be in the presence of them. Not only will our technology increase our communication on this holiday, but it will also ease travel.
In today’s day and age, travel is extremely expensive. Gas prices have increased drastically, as well as air travel. In the future I feel gas and airfare will decrease in price. This is due to the fact that new technology is allowing us to make bigger and better things. With these bigger and better things, people will be able to access them more easily. This will allow the prices to go down, especially if there is many options for travel. Technology is a major theme that will end up changing Christmas, in good and in bad
