Society changes in many different ways, especially through the opinions of others. Have you ever had a different point of view than someone else? In the novel Lord of the Flies, many of the boys have different views on how to live, especially Ralph and Jack. There are also other survivors such as the littluns, who have to decide on whether to live a safe, or fun life. The division between these boys causes them to forget about their responsibilities, leading them to become savages. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the lack of adult authority caused the boys to go savage by nature, since their opinions and loss of civilization overtook their responsibilities. Everyone has different opinions, especially the boys in Lord of the Flies. For example, Ralph is more sensible and believes that the boys need “to have rules and agree”, in order to maintain a safe life. He is all about the fire and insuring that the littluns will have huts to feel safe in. Ralph stays in control and doesn’t get distracted by the parties and hunting of his friend, Jack. The way the boys treated Piggy’s glasses is a symbol of losing civilization. When they used Piggy’s glasses to create fire, they broke his glasses. The broken glasses symbolized how the boys are going far from civilization and are adjusting to nature. Jack’s new rule of painting faces is also a sign of losing civilization. When they were still civilized, they wouldn’t make their faces dirty. They wanted to blend in with nature and that is what causes the lack of civilization.
