Societal Influence on Interracial Relationships
Although the idea of race is fundamentally a social construct created by people throughout history to identify, and label groupings of specific people, it is still a relevant and controversial topic in today’s society. Especially when focusing on the relational and marital actions between two immensely different races, and how those engaging in such relationship are effected by those close to them. The effect of family, friends, and even strangers in public or online can have an enormous impact on whether the relationship or marriage will be successful, or even determine if it will begin in the first place. Particularly since, even presently, large portions of people remain strongly opposed to interracial relationships even being permitted by law. According to the Gallup poll, only 77 percent of people in the United States approve of marriage between whites and African Americans (Field, Kimuna, and Straus 2013, p.744). This statistic indicates that a large percent of Americans are still ignorant to the belief that people should be free to marry whom they chose, and leads to the continuing of negative notions about interracial relationships. Even the thought of how parents would react to an interracial pairing for their child is frequently negative corresponding to; Field, Kimuna, and Straus (2013) stating that a clear racial difference is apparent, with white and black unions being viewed as the most unfavorable racial pairing by parents (p. 764). This perception is clear, despite the students surveyed having a consistently more positive view of all types of interracial dating. The fear of parental rejection can hold many people back from having the relationship they desire. The threats these couples face can be from parents and other family member’s disapproval of their relationship, and or from disapproving members of society. Social support has an important influence on all relationships, and many people have an interdependent relationship with those close to them, resulting in a substantial amount of distress when they or their partner is rejected. These forms of disapproval can cause the target to feel anxiety and judgement and are often apparent in their first interactions with the disapproving figure. Bell and Hastings observe that in the cases of parental disapproval, “Negative face threats communicated directly to the child are problematic because a parent and an adult son or daughter are more interdependent due to the affection experienced by all involved” (2015, p.763). Negative reactions of family members, especially parents results on the discomfort of both partners, understandably creating tension for later interactions. The authors also discover that when both families accept an interracial relationship the couple can be satisfied with the apparent care and concern of their families and are more likely to manage public disapproval efficiently (Bell and Hastings, 2015, p.
But what if you are a White female in a family that is very much against interracial marriage and you are in love with a Black man, or vice versa, if you are a Black woman in love with a White man who’s family is very secluded to the fact that interracial couples are becoming accepted amongst the 21st century. This exact conflict is represented in the movie Little White Lie. In the movie, Lacey’s mom, Peggy, had an affair and got pregnant by a black man. Peggy states “The fact is if the man with whom I had the affair hadn 't been Black none of this would have come out.” Meaning in the days when the affair has happened, 1968, it was considered so wrong to be in an interracial relationship that the only reason it was a big deal for Peggy to be having an affair was not because of the affair itself but because the affair was with a Black man. Today this belief of segregation among marriage or White and Black still exists, it’s just is not as strong. In today's society, relationships of all different kinds become more and more accepted each day. However, when it comes to interracial relationships, people still hold opposing viewpoints on the matter. For the most part, peoples' viewpoints all boil down to two beliefs; the traditional belief and the popular culture belief. People who follow the traditional belief are seen as more proud of and loyal to their culture/heritage and tend to be more segregated than others. They feel that when someone of their own culture dates someone outside of their own culture, he or she is "wanting to escape" from his or her cultural identity. Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
There is a specific meaning to race and how its role impacts society and shapes the social structures. Race is a concept that “symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies” (Omi & Winant 55). In other words, Omi and Winant get down to the crux of the issue and assert that race is just an illusion. Race is merely seen as an ideological construct that is often unstable and consisting of decentered social meanings. This form of social construction attempts to explain the physical attributes of an individual but it is constantly transformed by political struggles. People of different races are starting to date more (which shows the progression) but it is less likely to lead to marriage, compared to same race couples. Henderson and Rockquemore talk about how Americans believe we have developed a “color-blind” society, but they don’t specify what American think that or where the information comes from. This means the Americans they are referring to could all be in same race relationships. If that is the case, then the people who it matters to the most, the people in interracial relationships, might not think the same. Henderson and Rockquemore then go on to say, people in interracial relationships feel unique external pressures due to racism,
America has had a long history of racism. This fact is more easily understood if racism is understood for what it really is. It is more than just personal hatred. Racism is the “belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics” (What is Racism). The 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the American society. Nevertheless, racism still exists owing to the truth that it is still impossible to persuade the hearts of mankind in terms of racism, which leads to many people wondering how and when black and white racism will end in America. Race has been a controversial issue throughout history and even more so today. The idea of race has contributed to the justifications of racial inequality and has led to the prejudice and discrimination of certain racial groups. Race and racism were constructed to disadvantage people of color and to maintain white power in America. Today, race has been the center of many political changes and actions that have affected people of color. The idea of race has played a role in how people from different racial groups interact amongst each other. Interactions within one’s own racial group are more common than interactions among other racial groups, at least in my own experiences. Therefore, because I have been positioned to surround myself with people from my own racial group since a very young age, I have internalized that being around my own racial group is a normal and natural occurrence.
Marriage, as an institution, has evolved in the last few decades. As society progresses, the ideas and attitudes about marriage have shifted. Today, individuals are able to choose their partners and are more likely marry for love than convenience. While individuals are guaranteed the right to marry and the freedom to choose their own partners, it has not always been this way. Starting from colonial times up until the late 1960’s, the law in several states prohibited interracial marriages and unions. Fortunately, in 1967, a landmark case deemed such laws as unconstitutional. Currently, as society progresses, racism and social prejudice have decreased and interracial marriages have become, not only legal, but also widely accepted.
When a person of color is in a relationship with a white person, their relationship is often met with great tension. The history of issues with interracial relationships in the United States is long. Loving someone across the color line was once illegal, but now that segregation is over, more people are having interracial relationships.
This stage of my adolescent life was very memorable. This was the time when my life was becoming more complicated as I struggled to find my own racial identity, and constantly questioning myself, “Who am I?” “Where do I belong?” while facing the pressure of “fitting in” as a biracial teen in prejudicial Asian society.
All over the world, race is used by others to assign meaning to the way you look; people will use physical characteristics like: nose shape, eye shape, hair texture and most infamously, skin color to categorize race. Race isn’t a tangible concept, Social Construction Theory determines it’s more of a social idea created by institutions in society, meaning that it is created by society and is constantly changed. The notion of race is perpetuated and conserved, and therefore, must be changed by adjusting society’s preconceptions about race, institution’s structure and laws that are negatively based on race, and how education and awareness about race can create positive change.
The idea of ‘race’ is a problematic concept in various academic fields. In the discipline of Anthropology, the definition of this term carries much controversy. The concept of race that many people hold is in a sense, a social construct that changes amongst different cultures, one could look at different cultures to see racial definition as a cultural phenomenon in action (Kottak, 2000:139). King supports this idea that races are not established by a set of natural forces, rather they are products of human perception, “Both what constitutes a race and how one recognises a racial difference are culturally determined” (1981:156). Cashmore provides a brief definition of race as “a group of persons connected by common origin” (1988:235). However, Cashmore goes on to argue that the terminology of race has been used to reflect changes in the understanding of physical and cultural differences (1988:235). Sociology, the systematic study of human society, helps us understand these interactions and developments. Reflecting directly on the cultural attitudes and sociocultural messages explained throughout this course, it is clear that race, gender, and sexuality are all socially constructed in one way or another. Contrary to popular belief, race is actually almost completely socially constructed, it is not biological. Further, a human’s DNA does not differentiate at all to create any specific race. However, society has categorized certain things, such as skin color, to determine the race of individuals. In simpler terms, there are not specific genes that parents pass on to their offspring that determine their race; society categorizes people into specific races when they are born based on their
